US lawyers have been helping Iraqis prepare charges against Saddam but officials say they do not expect a trial until next year at the earliest. The US and the Iraqi authorities hope other defendants will first testify against him.

But none has been willing to do so. Whether it is out of loyalty or fear of retribution by Saddam's sympathisers is not clear.

Once charged the former president will be entitled to judicial guarantees including access to a lawyer and the right to prepare a defence.

The US has made clear it will continue to detain some Iraqis after the transfer of sovereignty as part of its security operations.

What's the deal? What are they going to do with Saddam?? Will they agree with the new government to keep him in a secure location until his trial date? This must be somewhat of a dilemma for Bush??

If Bush goes with his puppet government SH must be turned over to the "legitimate government" of Iraq. If he doesn't he is a war criminal.
But Bunnypants has Saddam's empty pistol. How sick is that?

The whole thing over there could not have gone worse. Our "leaders" seem to love running their genitals thru the wringer. The next big scandal will be the graft and corruption by those that are "rebuilding" Iraq.

This is why Kerry is wise to distance himself from this issue. What other horrors are in the pipeline? When the money is equal during the campaign Kerry can really cut loose. There will be much to bring to the voter's attention.

5. I guess I will go with you on this.

I mean the gun for the little boy? Like your father bringing you back a Luger after WW2. Is that spelling right? The German officers gun. I think what they are taking from us will be hunted down for years. Bush has the back hoe at the bank handing out out money. Well he never earned any and always got hand outs so to have his hand in our pocket is par for him. The hunt for that money should be fun. I think Kerry is smart to let Bush and Co jump in to the fire, my self.

2. This One Is A "Family Matter"

I'm willing to bet there's some secret memo floating around that says Saddam must be held under DOD control no matter what. We'll probably hear how Saddam's such a war criminal we couldn't dare trust this trial to the fragile new Iraqi government (if there is one) and that WE (ahem) know justice better than others.

Now has common sense departed these goons. Don't they remember where their army is and what it's doing? It's occupying a country that we know and the Iraqis know will end someday and that after we leave it will be like we arrived...sloppy and abrupt...and then whomever is left will be to their own devices to survive. In Vietnam this meant "re-education" camps...and surely there is going to be a lot of score-settling in Iraq once the protection of the US military is gone.

Now, the $64 question is what would happen to Saddam if this regime loses and if some accident occurs to him during the interim period between the election and the January removal of this regime...but I'm jumping too far ahead at this point. Right now, everyone's hedging their bets and this surely has to include those under American detention.

3. You are behind the news.

They have already said that they will turn over SD to the new "regime". Take it from there, its a done deal. The legitimacy of the new "government" demands it. World public opinion is at stake here and it must be considered.

The go it alone idea failed. There is now much retrenching. It will be a long retreat to defeat. Its just like that.

4. Yep...Just Hearing The Latest...But...

We're still in some real murky waters here as to the legitimacy of that "new government"...and what a mess it is. How much real legitmacy does a government have when you have foreign occupier on your soil? Don't these morons remember the puppet regimes he attempted to legitimize in Saigon all those years...and look at how difficult it's been for Lebanon...even today with Syrian troops still occupying a large chunk of that country.

Honestly, with Brahmini calling it quits I'm not very sure where the UN and "international" community stands right now on what's going on in Iraq...other than to sit back and see what this regime does next.
