House OKs Pre-emptive U.S. Attack Against Iran
by Trish Schuh
IndyMedia.Org

Undeterred by the results of pre-emptive war in Iraq, the House of Representatives passed a non-binding resolution May 6 authorizing pre-emptive military strikes against Iran. The vote was 376-3.

¡ÈIt has engaged in a systematic campaign of deception and manipulation to hide its true intentions and keep its large scale nuclear efforts a secret,¡É said Dan Burton (R-Indiana).

The resolution urges nations that have signed the Treaty on the Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons (See P. 13) to ¡Èuse any and all appropriate means to deter, dissuade and prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.¡É It also demands that the European Union, Asian nations, and Russia cease future commercial and energy trade with the Islamic Republic. Russia is the main contractor for Iran¡Çs nuclear grid.

House members said the legislation is in line with the Bush Doctrine of preventive war, and creates a legal framework for later sanctions and ¡Èmilitary options¡É against Iranian nuclear sites. Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) and Pete Stark (D-Calif.) both condemned the bill, noting its similarity to the law that permitted a preemptive war on Iraq.

1. Strikes me as posturing.
We're stretched too thin. Wait until Iran calls our bluff and then see what the Shrub does.

6. true, but
We're stretched thin on either side of Iran - both in Iraq and Afghanistan.

In 10 years people might be saying we invaded Iraq and Afghanistan just to set up the attack on Iran.

5. This is nuts
My Congressman voted against the action in Iraq but voted for this? What gives? Are we headed into war with Iran now too?

Might as well combine the Iraq and Afghanistan wars I gues into one big war. <sarcasam off>

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

7. Why does indymedia.org publish this shit?
Most of their stuff is terrific, but once in a while their factchekers either get lost in their ideology or go out for a long lunch or something. First of all, they should explain what a nonbinding resolution is. Then they should publish a link to the resolution itself which, after reading the whole damn thing, does notauthorize a preemptive strike against anybody.

What was the resolution for the invasion of Iraq? I'd like to look it up and compare the text.

10. We have got to get more Democrats elected to the House
to balance some of these crappy decisions out. As long as the house is controlled by the GOP our country will suffer, 'cause everything will done for partisan sake and not what's best for the country.

Only three congressmen voted against this. There are over 200 Democrats in the House.
