Primary voters decided that the best thing to put up against a deserter was a war hero with experience in politics. This does make sense. The problem is that most Democrats and independents want universal health care, an end to NAFTA, withdrawal from the WTO, support for Hugo Chavez and immediate pull-out from Iraq. Instead of reaching out to members of his own party and to independents who think the Democrats look like Republicans, Kerry seems to be trying to court the Republican vote. He may not have noticed but the Republicans already have a candidate for whom they are planning to vote.

So should Kerry reach out to the Democrats and independents or to the Republicans?

Many middle-of-the-road Republicans could certainly be targets for crossover votes in November, especially if Bush keeps screwing up.
