1. To quote Jeff Goldblum in "Jurassic Park":
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 08:55 AM by Kid_A
"I hate being right all the time."

Except this time, instead of predicting that dinosaurs would run amok, we predicted that the war would not go well and that there probably weren't any WMDs, and that there would be no way in Hell that we could win the "hearts and minds" of the Iraqi people.

Being right all the time really sucks.:nuke:

2. But remember that in the book the character played by Goldblum actually
died. That is what worries me. We MIGHT BE AS RIGHT AS WE WANT, but they can still eat us.

4. That scene on SNL
Where Will Farrell is playing Bush two years after the election--DC is in flames, Bush is swinging a flask, "Hello, old friend," and chaos is erupting. It's like a documentary from the future.

8. Goldblum's character didn't die in the book.
He was in the sequel. It was Richard Attenborough's character, the one who started the whole mess, that got eaten as punishment for his folly. So if anyone should die because of this, I think we all know who that would be...

3. I don't even see it as a prediction
I always saw it as just plain obvious truth that all that has happened would happen. The only thing I didn't see happening was the sheer depth of stupidity and dumbness that these idiots would go to. I knew they were overconfident cocky little evil f---s, and I knew their cockiness would get the best of them, but even *I* didn't think they were dumb enough to think they'd get away with some of the crap they've tried to pull.

But I knew, when Shrub announced his candidacy, that America would end up just like it has if that psychotic ass ended up in the white house. And not from prediction, but from mere logic: if an evil clown is running the country, and has a cabinet made up of other evil clowns, all tied to the Nixon and Reagan admnistrations, and to the defense industry adn the oil industry, well, disaster is the only logical outcome.

14. And there's not even one honest-to-goodness diplomat in the whole bunch
This administration had "disaster" written all over it from the beginning, even if the media whores were chirping about the "adults" being "back in charge".

18. My pal, esteem writer Dave McGowan laid it all out December 2000..
Read the following, and crap your pants. He either has a crystal ball or is just really, really smart; pick one:

http://davesweb.cnchost.com/Bush.htm

Shortly into the new administration, expect a fire to be staged in the Reichstag, providing the pretext to dissolve Congress and usurp legislative powers .... Oh, wait a minute ... I was thinking of another head of state that 'legally' assumed power. Never mind.
Instead, expect Bush's much ballyhooed tax 'reform' to be prominent on the agenda. Don't worry though; it won't have any effect on you. Capital gains and inheritance taxes will undoubtedly be slashed dramatically, perhaps even eliminated entirely. Income taxes may be lowered as well, though primarily for corporations and those with stratospheric incomes. Some savings might even trickle down to you, but don't count on it.
Expect also a stepped-up 'war on terrorism.' What this really means, of course, is an increased attack on the human and civil rights of Americans. We will naturally be told that our lawmakers are striking a balance between the rights of American citizens, and the need to guard against the nonexistent threat of international and domestic terrorism. In the name of protecting us, a wholesale attack on our few remaining democratic rights will be launched.
This is the kind of program that, we will be assured by the press, enjoys broad bipartisan support. Another bipartisan favorite we are likely to see is a new omnibus crime bill. More police, better equipped police, more prisons, more liberal use of the death penalty, restrictions on appeals, more behaviors criminalized, greater cooperation between federal, state and local law enforcement agencies: all of this and more is necessary if we're to get serious about being 'tough on crime.'
Two buzz words to be on the lookout for from Team Bush are 'privatization' and 'deregulation.' For the Bushwhackers, the more of both, the better. Schools, healthcare facilities and prisons are prime candidates for privatization, along with, of course, Social Security and Medicare. Deregulation could strike anywhere, at any time, touted as a way to lower consumer costs by increasing competition. Expect sudden and drastic price increases to follow any act of deregulation.
In the field of foreign policy, look for an increasingly belligerent attitude towards Poppy Bush's old buddy, Saddam Hussein. Never mind that the belligerent attitudes of the two previous administrations have cost as many as two million Iraqis their lives, as a result of the U.S.-imposed sanctions, the still frequent bombings, and the lingering environmental damage caused by the extensive use of radioactive depleted uranium.
It's time now to really get tough with Iraq. Tough enough, perhaps, to take modern warfare into the nuclear era. We may be witness to the world's first deployment of a 'tactical' nuclear weapon. This would most likely occur under the pretense of destroying alleged Iraqi underground nuclear/biowarfare facilities.
In other words, we may deploy our weapons of mass destruction in order to destroy their weapons of mass destruction. What could possibly be wrong with that? After all, everyone knows that they're fucking crazy. And who would question the motives of such great Americans as Colin Powell directing and approving such an action?
Elsewhere on the foreign relations front, expect a new mission for our men and women in uniform. Lots of money needs to be funneled into the pockets of Bush, Cheney and Baker's buddies in the 'defense' industry. The best way to do that, of course, is to find some place to dump our existing stockpiles of bombs and missiles.

etc, etc.... dave's rather brilliant if not intrepid.

Doesn't take an astrologist or forecaster to figure out you're gonna burn. Plain old common f*&king sense, as you say. Can't believe anyone voted for that bozo idiot. The writing was on the wall as to what would happen. But as they say, those who don't study history are condemned to repeat it. Which is fine for them - let them repeat - but their idiocy affects billions of other innocent people. :grr:

5. Man, if only the worst predictions about Bush were all that happened!
Shit, even in my worst nightmares, I never dreamed it would get so bad!

Bush has taken a big slimy stinky shit on the entire United States, put it between two slices of bread, and every last American who makes less than $1,500,000.00 per year is gonna have to take a BIG BITE!

6. I am not surprised you were so right so early, But
I don't think the truth is being revealed.

Take the difference between the front page of this mornings Tampa Tribune "Al-Qaida, Iraq Link Doubed", whereas the St. Petersburg Times states "No Al-Qaida Link". These are the two TampaBay morning papers, reading the same wire service.

Given that with the MSNBC promo for Hardball, when we hear Chris say "Do you think there is a link between Iraq and Al-Qaida?". I hear that at least ten times a day just watching the Imus show.

Somehow/someway, there is a continuous link made to the American public. So you stop off at Brophies for a happy hour beer, and you ask Joe Sixpack. Joe Do you think there is a link? And you get "Hmmmm, seems like I heard that somewhere".

It is a carefully and continuously managed by the White House especially Vice President Cheney to keep that one main theme that will reselect the President alive and in the minds of voters, just as the continuous use of the word terror from the Presidents mouth. Even in his supposedly talk on health care in Liberty, Missouri this week. It filtered right in at the end.

17. Had to reply to you
Racenut20 - Tony Stewart fan maybe?

Anyway, you are absolutely correct in this.

I was just at the Pocono NASCAR race this weekend with my wifes family and politics and came up. My one brother-in-law is a big time Bush supporter. As we talked about the mess in Iraq, sure enough, I heard this line again - "You can't tell me that that guy (Saddam) didn't have something to do with 9/11".

In the interest of family unity I didn't challenge him on it though later we had a real good discussion about gun control and how the democrats want to take away everyones weapons so that we couldn't defend ourselves if we were invaded by another country.

Don't get me wrong, I love my brother-in-law, he's a great guy. I just cannot understand where he gets his views from. Also, I think a lot of people maybe know this was wrong but because they were so fooled there is a strong sense to find a way to rationalize.

7. I don't know about everyone else, but every time I hear
some "expert" saying "No one expected X" or "No one could have imagined Y" I want to scream, because so many of us did expect, and did imagine, and laid out our reasons for doing so thoughtfully and logically and were matter-of-factly dismissed/ignored.

It amazes me that being that George Bush ran the state of Texas into the ground that people would still vote this idiot into office.

Anybody with the I.Q. higher than a Cockroach could have perceived this whole
mess about to happen.
A part of me wouldn't give a damn except that the sons-of-bitches
that voted for this piece-of-shit are gonna' drag all of us into the gutter.

10. Only since Dec 2000 have I been "right all the time"
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 09:48 AM by tom_paine
Well, ok, 90% of the time, but that's insanely higher that the 60% I used to have during the Days of the Old Republic.

Here's my Theory: DUers, most of us, share one thing, a keen nose for Totalitarianism. In my case, losing seven Great Uncles in Stalin's Gulags forced me at an early age to get wise to the ways of Totalitarianism. Reading "1984" and "Farenheit 451" and "Animal Farm" as a young lad honed the sense even further.

Totalitarianism is predictable. Boringly so. Stalin, Hitler, all of 'em, once you had the trick of reading their lies, you always knew (know) because the essential "Totalitarianism does exactly the opposite of which it professes to do," is such a goddamned simple and so very accurate rule, we have all suddenly become Cassandras and Nostradami.

It's creepy and weird.

to fulfill. I also knew that having two oilmen in the white house was a recipe for disaster. I tried to reason with as many people as I could before the 2000 election on this basis. I knew bush was bad news the first time I laid my eyea on him. When he stole the election I knew he had absolutely no shame. And that he was about to take the country on a wild and exhausting ride.

But hey! Nader said there was no difference between bush and Gore. So what do I know?

I really never even considered that they might do shit like out a CIA agent working on WMD proliferation or faclitate an Iranian spy and funnel Nat'l Security secrets and tens of millions of dollars to him (Chalabi). In my wildest, fevered imaginations I never thought they were THAT bad and/or stupid/incompetent.

What up bud?!

Coming up to NYC anytime in the near future?

20. actually, it's depressing ...
Edited on Thu Jun-17-04 09:50 AM by welshTerrier2
hi Pete ...

longtime no see ...

before the invasion of Iraq, even before the IWR vote, I posted all sorts of articles on the outside of my office at work that described the inevitable increased risk of terrorism from bush's insane military adventures ... there are also all sorts of cartoons showing long lines of people waiting to "enroll" in Al Qaeda ...

i haven't added anything; i haven't removed anything for more than a year and a half ... i wanted to be on the record with what seemed so obvious ... all the great "patriots" came by to tell me what a "radical" I was ... radical !!! heh ...

was it radical to understand that bush and his friends were invading to exploit Iraq? was it radical to believe people like Hans Blix and Scott Ritter when they said there was no evidence of WMD's?

I don't find being right weird; i find it depressing ... what are we to do when we live in a country filled with people who too easily trust their government and ignore the obvious ??? what are we to do when our system of check and balances "sells out to corporate interests" while waving the American flag in our faces ??? and what are we to do when our voices are barely heard over the corporate drones who control our mass media ???

and I'm not surprised that the truth has come out now ... bush's evil has been laid bare for all the world to see ... and now it's a world that holds America, and Americans, responsible for his hideous conduct ... truth often will not be denied ... unfortunately, tens of thousands had to suffer and die before it was revealed ... and the ultimate damage to human dignity and world peace will remain beyond measure ...

21. On December 20, 2000
I predicted that Bush would have us into a war within a year, because he needed one to solidify power.

I predicted that his administration would roll back as many civil liberties, labor protections, and environmental laws as they could.

I predicted that corporations would be the real government, and that this bunch would be taking dictation from them when it came to economics.

I predicted massive unemployment and falling wages.

I predicted that he would pack the courts with as many far-right judges as he could find.

What I missed was the Enron rape of California, a second war (which I thought would be the first and only war), and that I really thought he'd have to declare martial law by now.

Nobody listened, of course. I've often considered changing my name to Cassandra.

I just wish I'd been wrong.
