I called an AM "Oldies" station today.....

...after hearing the disc jockey, or announcer (or whatever they call them these days) make the following statement, completely out of the blue and with no context:

"You know, the 9/11 Commission wouldn't be able to make a link between Saddam Hussein and his moustache."

About 20 minutes later, I was on my cell phone to the station. I told them I wanted to register an complaint about something I heard on their radio station. They transferred me to "Gary", evidentally the guy who had said it.

I explained that his comment was very offensive, that the 9/11 commission was bipartisan and had been appointed to make such judgements. I said that his need to shove his political beliefs down his listeners' throats was reprehensible.

Gary - "Most people think the 9/11 Commission was partison."

Me -- "No, most people do NOT think that. That is something you are merely saying to me on the telephone right now."

Gary -- "Well, blah blah blah platitude."

Me -- "I can see that I've made absolutely no impression on you."

Gary -- "Well we appreciate hearing other points of view.." or some such.

At that point, I lost it and said "F___ You." and hung up.

Yep, I lost my temper, and that was probably not the best way to handle it. But, I could tell he really didn't give a crap about what I was saying or what I thought. Anyone have similar experiences? Is there a better way to handle this type of thing? Do you think it did any good for me to call?

1. That's the typical bush* attitude.
Remember when bush* said "who cares what you think?" Looks like this guy took a page right out of his playbook.

7. Is the station owned by Clear Channel?
In Houston, the album rock station K-LOL is Clear Channel, and while they were a hip, progressive station in the 70's and 80's, they are now a pro-war, pro-Republican station. The DJ's make cracks like that all the time -- especially the morning drive folks are unbelievably racist. It's time for new underground radio like we had in the 60's! FISH Cheer and all!!!

30. Ok, I reread them..

....You start out saying that you don't buy "my story." How many ways are there to interpret that??

Then somehow, you figure out what state I'm living in, and you feel need to make mention of that (which I also think is kind of absurd, not to mention weird). What do you do, sit around and track IP addresses???

So, next time you don't buy "my story", just move on and we'll both be happier. Just assume I have no veracity and keep your comments to yourself? It seems like everyone else was able to glean something from the story and add some thought or information. If you can't, why do you even respond???

31. Thank you for re-reading my posts and responding.
Your DU profile says you are in Washington.

You put that information there, not me. If you don't want that info in your profile, you should consider deleting it. It's there for anyone to see. It's not absurd or weird to examine it. It takes one click.

I don't know how to track your IP address, I have no idea what it is.

There is nothing in this thread that backs up your story, and you refuse to post any information that might verify it. Instead, you say I have called you a liar, which I haven't. With more information, your story may prove valid. If so, I was wrong and will admit it.

Post #24 points out that "Gary" might not even be in your town. You acknowledge this by saying in post #27, "I didn't realize that...they did switch me to him..and it sounded a bit odd. But the number was local, so who knows?" All I wanted to know was, which station? It's pretty straightforward. If we knew the station, a lot of DUers (me included) would rush to your defense and make phone calls and send emails. When I first read your post, that's what I was looking for.

Facts are good. You have not provided any. Many people post here who don't back up what they say, skooooo, and they are challenged. Don't take it personally. If you are that passionate, back it up. I won't post stuff that I can't verify because I know I'll be called on it. We all expect that here, right?

If you are able to verify any part of your story, I will publicly apologize to you on DU for all to see. It's not personal. It really isn't.

I don't know if what you say is true or not, that's all. What's bad about questioning that? You're just posting on the Internet like me, right? You shouldn't believe anything I say either, unless it is verifiable. I wouldn't expect anything less....
:) Peace to you and all.

38. I just think that responding "I don't buy your story"..

...is inappropriate. If you don't buy someone's story, you can politely ask questions. There's no way I can "prove" this happened. It was a telephone conversation. I didn't record it. Believe what you will.

But be disbelieving and confrontational when someone is honestly trying to relate an event to you, expect defensiveness and a certain amount of testiness.

I can't prove anything.

42. I should have worded my initial response differently
I can see how that would be taken as a challenge, which it was.

My questions were polite. I didn't mean to offend you and I hope we can leave it at that. I didn't ask for a recording.

I neither believe nor disbelieve. There's not enough information. I meant no personal offense, and I am remorseful about hurting your feelings.

Okay, I can't prove that. :) You'll just have to take my word for it....

:hi:

Although I did in another post...I wasn't asking anyone to rush and defend me. Defend me from what? I ruined it by telling the guy "fuck you".

I still don't understand why giving the call letters proves my story one way or the other. I don't know why I have to prove myself anyway. Why would I make this up??

13. After listening to the hearings on the radio and watching them...
...on television I would have to say that the D.J. is guilty of a severe understatement. After all the pandering to the camera I saw on day one I knew that it was all a farce. I am also familiar with Gorelick from the OK City bombing and saw my suspicions about her lack of investigative skills confirmed during the Nichols trial. It is my opinion that that lady could not investigate her own behind if her head was up it.

I would like to see a 911 Commission formed...using investigators, not politicians.

"Just spin the records, jerk off."

And then hung up. The world doesn't need the opinions of some hackney disc jockey. It really irritates me when random political comments (that I disagree with, of course) are thrown out in those types of situations. Just shut the fuck up and play the records. Nobody cares about your opinion.

With technology "local" DJs are not so local. A radio chain such as Clear Channel can have one DJ for many cities.

26. Whenever someone throws the "partisan" 9/11 commission
Ask them how:

a Republican Senate
a Republican Congress
a Republican President

Would sign off on a PARTISAN Democratic 9/11 commission.
Would be an interesting answer. They would have to admit (at least in their own mind) that either

A. Republicans are stupid
B. The 9/11 commission was fair and balanced

32. actually it IS partisan, but
partisan leaning pro=Bush.

It was NOT an independent commission. It was hand-picked by Bush.

And though it's come out with a few things that contradict the official line, overall it seems more of a whitewash.

So this is more of the right wing talking points: Portray the pro-Bush commission findings as "partisan" and thus suspect...

Typical extremist mouthpiece.
