Back in the first Bush presidency Linda Tripp was stationed down the hall from the Oval Office. She somehow caught wind on a long known but well-kept Washington secret: President George Bush had a "special" relationship with a staffer named Jennifer Fitzgerald.

In fact, Bush had been "very close" to this Jennifer beginning in Peking back in the days when Bush was our delegate to Red China. So close, in fact, that Barbara Bush had come home to D.C. in a state of "depression."

Years later, during Bush's vice presidency, Jennifer Fitzgerald held a key staff post – and this caused a virtual revolt among his other loyal staffers. They hated the haughty, pushy and arrogant woman who clearly had more "access" to Bush than they did.

Vice President Bush went to Geneva in 1984 during the arms talks and arranged through our negotiators to stay in a government guest house – with Jennifer Fitzgerald. Our ambassador was aghast!

When Bush became president, Jennifer Fitzgerald was moved over to the protocol office inside the State Department. But she was still visible at public functions and occasionally traveled with the presidential party.

Those "in the know" inside Washington knew about this relationship. A Washington Post story at the time had carefully danced around the topic, even speculating about the "positions" Fitzgerald had taken with Bush.

Linda Tripp learned of it and saw it from her desk down the hall from the Oval Office. She thought it inappropriate. And she told people about it.

Got Character?
You're in a Mexican diner in Dallas, Texas. You're sitting at a table, eating your dinner quietly. At the next table, there is a a couple eating with their four-year-old son at the table.

Suddenly, another man storms up to the small family. He is apparently drunk, and furious. "You f***ing son of a b****!" he shouts at the father. Everyone stops eating and stares at the man. You cringe when you see the young boy.

"I saw what you wrote," he rants on. "We're not going to forget this." You feel shock at this kind of drunken behavior in a public restaurant. You feel sympathetic fear for the man and his wife, being threatened in such an ominous way, as if the man were a member of organized crime and the family could expect thugs to visit them in the night with baseball bats or something.

You might fear the man who stormed in and raved, you might feel disgusted, angry, or perhaps, if you are more compassionate, you might feel pity.

But would you elect him president?

The above incident did in fact happen. It was early April, 1986. The drunk was George W. Bush, and the man and woman with the child were Wall Street Journal editor Al Hunt and his wife, Judy Woodruff. Hunt had written an editorial in which he predicted that Jack Kemp, not George Bush Sr., would win the GOP presidential nomination in 1988.

• Reports of George Bush's liaisons have circulated among journalists for more than a decade in the same way that reporters laughed about President Kennedy's dalliances back in the '60s. Columnist Jack Anderson, the Washingtonian magazine and several "alternative" publications have written of the rumored philandering. Demonstrators in Washington on more than one occasion have chanted the names of the president and a woman. And then there is the famous Washington Post lead on a story announcing the appointment of one of Bush's alleged mistresses to a high State Department post: ", who has served President-elect George Bush in a variety of positions, . . ."

Richard Allen, advisor to President Reagan on foreign affairs, Robert MacFarlane, diplomatic runner in the negotiations with the Iranians from the start. He and Allen were present at a first meeting arranged by Senator Tower between the Reagan-Bush campaign committee and the Iranians. Also on the plane and playing an important part in those first negotiations were William Casey, chairman of the campaign committeel Bob Gates, CIA official and Bush pal, now the director of the CIA and another close Bush friend and 30-Year veteran of the CIA, Donald Gregg. Little known but extremely important as a messenger, money bearer and plotter was Dr. Earl Brian, who once bought UPI. There was one woman, Jennifer Fitzgerald, Bush associate, who also is a member of the CIA.

In Kitty Kelley's biography of Nancy Reagan, there is a story allegedly told by Nancy about a drunken driving auto accident that George H.W. Bush had while he was Reagan's VP. I believe the story goes that the Secret Service interrupted a Reagan dinner party one night with the news that Capital police had arrested George H.W. Bush after he hit another car and that a women, not his wife, was in his vehicle. The Reagans supposedly had a good laugh about it and the President had to intercede with the police to keep the matter quiet.

31. Found it - "Nancy had peddled the story of 'George and his girlfriend'"

In 1991, author Kitty Kelly published an unauthorized biography of former First Lady Nancy Reagan. There was one major incident mentioned in Kelly's best-selling book that was censored by 99.99% of the American newsmedia: the alleged arrest of the vice president of the United States for DWI.

Kelly told SPY magazine (a satirical collection of humor covering the rich, powerful and famous), "That was something nobody mentioned. I don't know why. That one incident is cold—you've got a date in the book. And I interviewed people who were in that dinner party. . . . The book was thouroughly vetted by the publisher's lawyers. I have that story on tape, and yes, I had to give up the source's name to the lawyers." SPY noted that when it came to Kelly's biography of the First Lady: "Just about everything that mattered, and much that didn't, was quoted somewhere —except for one wholly ignored little anecdote on page 507."

Kelly wrote:

"To certain friends, Nancy had peddled the story of 'George and his girlfriend' that had been told to her about the evening of March 18, 1981, when some of 'the group' were having dinner at Lion d'Or in Washington, D.C. 'Suddenly there was a great commotion,' recalled one of the five dinner guests, 'as the security men accompanying the Secretary of State and the Attorney General converged on our table. They started jabbering into their walkie-talkies, and then whispered to Haig and Smith, who both jumped up and left the restaurant. The two men returned about forty-five minutes later, laughing their heads off. They said they had had to bail out George Bush, who'd been in a traffic accident with his girlfriend. Bush had not wanted the incident to appear on the police blotter, so he had his security men contact Haig and Smith. They took care of things for him, and then came back to dinner."

Note that police officers never arrest a driver after a traffic crash unless the driver either (1) kills someone (or a group of people), or (2) the driver is suspected of drunk driving/drugged driving (DWI/DUI). Since the White House dinner guests were "laughing their heads off," it is presumably safe to interpolate the vice president's crash did not involve dead bodies (even though Haig—as a 4-star general during the Vietnam War/"police action"—presumably doesn't care about dead bodies).

Less than two weeks later, Nancy's husband Ronald was shot by John Hinkley, as were three presidential aides. Hinkley's brother was scheduled to have dinner with George Bush's son Neil, according to an article On Tuesday, March 31 the Houston Post published a copyrighted story under the headline:

"BUSH'S SON WAS TO DINE WITH SUSPECT'S BROTHER, by Arthur Wiese and Margarte Downing." The lead paragraph read as follows: "Scott Hinckley, the brother of John Hinckley Jr., who is charged with shooting President Reagan and three others, was to have been a dinner guest Tuesday night at the home of Neil Bush, son of Vice President George Bush, The Houston Post has learned." <more>

At about the same time, L.A. Weekly ran a piece titled "The Mistress Question." The article, by Richard Ryan, asserted that "two impeccable sources are offering much harder information" about what had previously been "common gossip" in Washington circles -- namely, "Bush's long-running affair with his appointments secretary, Jennifer Fitzgerald." Both sources -- "people of stature in their respective fields" -- insisted on anonymity. The piece ended with paired quotes. Asked why he had never assigned a reporter to look into Bush's private life, Evan Thomas, Newsweek's Washington bureau chef, replied, "Newsweek has no desire to break a story on the topic." William Greider of Rolling Stone, for his part, said he'd heard "a lot of gossip over the years" and had asked journalists, "Why aren't you covering this? Why aren't you publishing this?"

One answer was provided this summer by Washington Post media writer Howard Kurtz, who pointed out that "several news organizations, including The Washington Post and Los Angeles Times, have investigated the rumor but found no evidence to substantiate it." Evan Thomas, again sought out for comment, supplied another reason. "It's very hard to look into the story," he told Joe Conason. "How do you do it without someone stepping forward like Gennifer Flowers?"

The Chicago Tribune found a way of looking without seeming to stare. In a June 21 "Media Watch" column (SEEKING A MIDDLE GROUND: SPY MAGAZINE'S BUSH-WHACKING PART OF A BROADER EFFORT TO SURVIVE), James Warren used Conason's article as "a window on a magazine" trying to expand beyond New York. First, though, he summarized its findings, along the way introducing details that lent weight to Conason's reporting. Among other papers that took note of Spy's revelations were the New York Post, The New York Observer, the Philadelphia Daily News, the Fort Wayne, Indiana, NewsSentinel, and the National Enquirer. As for New York's Good Gray Lady of record, she prudently averted her eyes.....Even the Times was compelled to cast a sideways glance at the mistress story, however, when, on August 11, the New York Post yelled at the top of its tabloid lungs THE BUSH AFFAIR. Flanking the fat type were photos of Bush and Ms. Fitzgerald, whose resemblance to Mrs. Bush was almost eerie.

Now the entire multiheaded media monster swiveled, gawked, and ran stories about Bush's response, which among other things was to say, "It's a lie." BUSH ERUPTS! boasted the Post. Among the folks Bush erupted on were network correspondents who had the audacity to seek comment on an allegation heard round the world. "I'm not going to take any sleazy questions like that from CNN," Bush snapped at Mary Tillotson, who, Bush spokesman Marlin Fitzwater later said, "will never work around the White House again." Stone Phillips of NBC also took heat for venturing to ask Bush if he had ever had an affair. To ask such a question "in the Oval Office" struck Bush as very bad manners.
