how would al gore have handled 9/11's aftermath?

i'm rereading some of Nader's "the dems and repubs are exactly alike" interviews in which he said that al gore would also have attacked iraq. now, i'm sure that that's incorrect, but i'm pretty sure he would have gone after the Taliban, and probably been nasty towards the saudis.

any thoughts?

I think Al Gore's FBI would have stopped it. He actually knew Al Quaeda was a threat BEFORE they killed so many.

Although I think it would have been a much longer process. He would have allowed the UN inspectors to do their work, and have allowed Saddam to either prove his perfidity or to clear his name. It's hard to say what would have happened, actually. I mean I dont' have much doubts in my mind that Saddam liked the idea of getting some Weapons of Mass destruction for himself and his regime.

But Al Gore would have done the whole thing in a much less belligerent, arrogant, idiotic fashion compared to the current resident at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

attacked the Taliban, he would have caught OBL. He would have "gone straight to the people" and gotten them to back legislation for more efficient automobiles and alternative fuel sources to lessen our dependence on middle east oil. He would have pushed our sources of so-called intelligence for all their worth to investigate all sides of the issue to determine realistically what sort of threat Iraq was or if it was any at all. He would not have given tax cuts for the wealthy and long about now, we would be talking about containing health care costs while providing adequate health care for everyone and talking about education.

I think Gore would have paid attention to the Gore report and to the later done by Hart/Rudmann (was it Rudmann?). I don't think Gore would have told his DOJ to lay off Bin Laden. I don't think he would have allowed his secretary of Defense to remake policy so that the military had to clear everything through him or her before launching sorties to check out hi-jacked planes. I don't think he would have ignored the warnings from other countries. I don't think he would have gone on vacation for the month of august.

No I don't think there would have been any 9-11. Clinton's administration stopped major attacks from happening and I think a Gore administration would have done the same if not better.

Gore would NOT have disbanded an effective counterterrorism effort. Gore would have retained it, funded it and staffed it.

Gore would NOT have allowed the State Dept. to prevent John O'Neill from resuming his investigation in Yemen, nor would a Gore State Dept have wanted to.

Gore would NOT have allowed the Dept of Justice to quelch FISA requests, in fact I dare say that a Gore D of J would have continued issuing them as they saw fit just like Reno under Clinton.

A Gore admin would NEVER had blown off the Phoenix memo.

Agent Rowley would have gotten the FISA warrant she requested.

The links from the Moussaoui investigation to Atta would have been discovered, the links to the Phoenix memo subjects would have been discovered, a frantic phone poll of flight schools undertaken, a roundup would ensue and it is likely 9/11 would not only be greatly curtailed if not outright prevented, but the prinicple members would be under arrest and under interrogation.

The response would have been focused and extremely effective. OBL would not have been allowed to slip away at Tora Bora.

as a sidenote, when you refer to major attacks that clinton stopped, which ones do you mean? b/c i am tired of having to explain that he was a good anti-terrorist president.

Do you think that 9/11 still would have occurred under Al Gore? I'm sure Gore would have continued every single anti-terror policy set forth by the Clinton administration. I can't believe Gore would have gone on a month-long vacation after receiving a memo titled "Bin Laden Determined to Attack in US." We should seriously consider that the attacks may never have happened under Gore.

Sure, it's very possible the attacks still would have occurred, but I just can't help but think that they would either have been less massive or would not have happened at all. (Can you see Gore just sitting in that classroom reading "My Pet Goat"? I sure can't.)

Nader's a complete idiot; he might actually be stupider and more insane than shrub himself. There's no way Gore would have invaded Iraq. The Iraq invasion was mixture of oil, Neoconservative wishes for hegemony, and a personal vendetta of shrub himself. The only factor of those that would have been present in a Gore administration would have been oil, but it wouldn't have had the same influence as it does with shrub and Mr. Halliburton at the helm.

9. If 9/11 had happened under Gore's watch

(which, I agree, would be highly unlikely), Gore would have gotten to the White House and taken charge of things from the get-go. Fighters would have been scrambled and I seriously doubt if all the planes that hit their targets would have gotten that far. It might have been dicey around NYC, but I think that something could have been done that would have saved at least one of the Trade Center towers.

I know that Gore would have been immediately on the airwaves, reassuring the nation that actions would have been taken. And those actions would NOT have included invading Iraq. They would have taken the form of UN resolutions and mounting a true coalition to find al Qaeda and take them out.
