Russians' attitudes toward the United States are improving. According to a recent poll, 47 percent of Russians now view Americans positively, while 44 percent hold a negative opinion. This difference falls within the poll's 3 percent margin of error, but it nevertheless represents a marked improvement over last year, when the cons topped the pros by 55 percent to 36 percent
Russians haven't warmed up to U.S. President George W. Bush, however. Some 60 percent of those surveyed voiced their dislike of Bush, roughly in line with public opinion worldwide. Only 14 percent of German respondents and 15 percent of the French indicated a positive assessment of Bush.
Having said that, it would be a disaster if Bush's Democratic opponent, John Kerry, were to prevail in the November election. The next president will inherit an untenable situation created by the current administration's policies. Iraq has turned into a classic quagmire. Staying on will entail ever-rising costs in American lives, dollars and reputation, while withdrawal could turn Iraq into a failed state and heighten instability throughout the Middle East.
