Poll question: Best Thing About the South
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 06:51 PM by Gringo
Okay, I started a stupid thread that turned into a stupid flame war because I made generalizations about the south.

This poll is a little gesture to make up for that fiasco.

So, what is the best thing about the south?

These answers are NOT all sarcastic, by the way.

ON EDIT: To whoever wants to make this serious: It ain't - maybe these answers will make you happier.

It's far away from Oregon! Heck, you'd have to go to Washington or Alaska to get farther away, but then you wouldn't be in Oregon.

Okay, I'm kidding. Uhhh, I'll go with the kind, polite people thing, I guess. And hope it's true.

15. It's the food, darlin'
That's the main thing I miss, apart from my family, now that I'm living up here in Michigan. I get back down to Texas a couple of times a year and load up on barbecue and Tex-Mex.

Of course, Texas isn't really part of the south, is it? It's its own republic. So perhaps I'd better change my vote to "sweet tea."

23. They're not all sarcastic
"Kind People", "Magnolias", "Dumbya's absence", and "other", are all legit choices. The others are humorous and hardly "bashing". Feelings hurt about the slash pines? Bummer. Maybe the southerners should have left a few native hardwoods standing. This poll is a little closer to the sentiment I originally intended for the other thread. I guess racism is just too heavy to stay lighthearted about.

Then you go bashing the "Rust Belt", whose manufacturing sector was largely decimated because of Repukes and right-wing (southern) dems who voted for NAFTA? You hate it because it's cold? Because people are out of work? What southern manners and politeness? None of the replies here have been bitter until you and Kamika stepped in.

You cant defend the South in anyway in this forum. I think this has something to do with Clarks entrance in the race. The entrenched Northeast Liberals are threatened that another Southern Democrat is going to take the nomination and become president.

The southern bashing has just begun pal, sit back and take it.

I don't know what else to say to you. You've obviously got skin thinner than an onion's when it comes to the south. I'm sorry, I conceded on the other thread, and I've watered down this one. I guess you think that the south is above any and all criticism, or the slightest ridicule. Whatever. I realize that there are a lot of problems. You are the one making this nothing little poll into a big issue.

36. This is not a south-bashing thread!!!
It may have a little pin-prick of satire, but I welcomed everyone to say good things about the south and they have.

Also, did Clark really enter the race? I haven't heard that. I am not by any stretch anti-Clark, BTW.

I am so sick and tired of the Southern bashing that goes on in this board!!!!!! I mean it!!!! I am about ready to leave this DU-anti-Southern mess and vote Pat Buchanan!!!!

At least, Buchanan is in favor of protecting American jobs, is not against the South, and is in favor of building our infrastructure back to where it should be!!!!!

I cannot stand *shrub. He is an &&%*(*(( who is sending American jobs overseas and failing to invest in America. Why oh why won't the :dem:'s come out strong with a platform for investing in America - the infrastructure and our workers.....in the tradition of Franklin Delano Roosevelt.

The Southern bashing has gotta stop, or I will vote rightist- third party!!!!

edit: fixed whacky HTML

It's a lighthearted poll. Apparently someone thinks there is no racism, and that's fine. Somebody likes the "curios" and that's fine too.

I know there are northern racists too, and western ones too. What's your point?

26. My point is that
unlike in the north and west where racism for the most part is shunned, in the south not only is racism rampant and widely accepted, you'll easily see racists running for office and winning them. And instead of seeing some southern dems taking a stand against it, they usually just point fingers.

56. Northern Racism is *Publicly* Shunned
I spent the first 30 years of my life in Upstate NY and Vermont, the last 10 in TN.

I'd known my best friend from high school for 17 years. She never had a problem with my black nephews who lived a state away, but years later when it came time for her to choose a place to settle down, she made no bones about wanting her kids in a predominatly (like, 99%) white school district. And this is not an uneducated person; masters' degree in social work, for crying out loud.

In the Albany NY area (about 15% black when I lived there), there was plenty of segregation, and loads of mistrust, if not outright racism, between both black and white. The grocery store in the most racially and financially integrated neighborhood was affectionately known as "Ghetto Chopper."

In the South, I know within 5 minutes if I'm talking to someone with a chip on their shoulder, either way. And I much prefer that to the polite fiction of "we're not like that" in the North.

45. snicker
I have to say I am kind of slightly lukewarmed amused by this
screaming. I was born in Cali-fornia, raised in Orygun and
live in Alaska.

I have seen two Oregon bashes here. That's cool. Oregon is
heaven to me and the land I love. <HOME OF THE FREE AND THE
BRAVE!!!!> Um, sorry. :0)

I am in despair over California. Love it even if it is the
cutting edge of weirdness, grooviness and Disneyland.

Each region has its faults. Part of the problem here as I
can see it (AND I MAY BE WRONG!!!!) we have a lot of faux
'southerners' like Dumya, psychos like Ashcroft and DeLay
that make it difficult to separate their Southerness from
their plain non-regional specific dipshittiness.

Personally, my feelings run the gamut for the south: we are
from Virginia and Missouri. The food, the manners, the
beauty of the land and the buildings compete for the sourness
the above fake southern crackers leave in my mind.

I love this country, all of it. All of its people from end
to end. We all matter, foibles and all. We all need to get
to know each other better and work together if we want to
get the junta off our backs. What's happening to California
and Florida and Texas right now affects us all.

Maybe living in a progressive state all my life and living
up here near the arctic circle gives me perspective, I
don't know. I just know we got to learn to understand each
other and from that comes tolerance.

RV, digging you all from way the HELL up here. :)

43. The TVA
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 07:54 PM by inthecorneroverhere
Y'all betta recognize somethin'!!!!!

There is something called the TVA down heah in de South. Franklin D. Roosevelt created it back in the 1930s when these folks was bone-poor. It's a kind of a rural electrification sort of 'socialism,' also known as 1940s era investment in infrastructure.

The lights are on in Dixie!!!

We're not singing that song about 'The Night the Lights went out in Georgia. Y'all up Nawth have fun playing that song on the battery radios tonight!!!!

We in Dixie got's to thank the TVA and FDR.

Post-1968 'social liberals' have a lot of lessons they need to learn about promoting infrastructure, rather than helping the **&^%% neo-cons tear it down!!!!! Y'know, with things like the celebrities suing the wind power producers off the coast of Massachusetts and things like Jackson Browne trying to shut down nuclear plants, etc..

46. I like the Sweet Tea
Being new to the Southland, I have discovered that Southerners love tea in syrup form. OK, so they drink it in the Bootheel of Missouri where I am from, but I grew up closer to Kansas than the Bootheel. I think they would consider it prideful to use sugar in that manner in Kansas.

I voted "none of the above" (The food is much better in the megalopolis!)

Seriously, there are some very nice people there, but nothing on that list struck me as a potential positive. Having moved to NC from California at age 12 was a major culture shock fro which I never recovered.

To this day the "spirituality" widespread down there (and NC is among the better states) bothers me to no end.
