State Republican leaders asked the Republican National Committee recently whether they had the authority to name a replacement candidate if Ryan decided to withdraw, according to a GOP source speaking only on condition of anonymity. The source said the RNC told them the state party did have such authority.

The U.S. Senate race in Illinois is just beginning to awaken from its post-primary nap, and the first story out of the box is about Republican Jack Ryan dispatching a lackey with a video camera to dog his Democratic rival, state Sen. Barack Obama. This employee has been following Obama everywhere, even to the bathroom, recording his phone calls to his wife, sticking a camera in his face, heckling him while he talks to the press.

We thought better of Ryan. A class act with a closet full of skeletons himself, we expected he'd want to stay on the high road. But as bad as a renegade campaign worker would have been, the truth behind Justin Warfel, Ryan's 24-year-old cameraman, is worse. It's a deliberate attempt, Ryan's campaign says, to "make sure that message is consistent."

We think it's worse than that. We think it's harassment, and a sign of premature desperation from Ryan, who trails in the polls. Obama has not been caught in any contradictions by this stunt, but Ryan has been exposed as a candidate willing to resort to unprecedented tactics -- which in Illinois is saying a mouthful -- to shore up his sagging hopes. If this is any indication of how the campaign will unfold, hang on to your hats. It's going to be a wild ride.

Eight columns for the price of one: Is there anyone who wasn't creeped out by the story about the guy from the Jack Ryan campaign who's following state Sen. Barack Obama with a hand-held video camera? Even when you're running for the U.S. Senate, you should not have to contend with a mope who stalks you all the way to the bathroom door. And if anyone should be sensitive to the privacy rights of political candidates, it should be Ryan, who wants his divorce records to remain sealed.

Over the weekend, a spokeswoman for Ryan apologized and said the vid-stalker has been told to maintain a "comfortable distance" -- but the best public relations move would be to pull the guy from active duty.

Ryan, a millionaire investment banker who later became a high school teacher, again refused Wednesday to release all the documents from his 1995 divorce from "Star Trek: Voyager" and "Boston Public" actress Jeri Ryan. Jack Ryan says he has released everything except for documents pertaining to his 9-year-old son.

So, in other words, either the documents involving all of this also applied to his son (ick!), or he's lying. I wonder which one?

Anybody else got anything? I'd love to see his public comments on matters of sexuality... if he's for keeping people's private lives private, then he shouldn't be attacked on this, but if he's not, then he brought it upon himself.

Republican Senate candidate Jack Ryan pressured his wife, actress Jeri Lynn Ryan, to have sex in clubs while others watched, she charged in divorce documents released Monday.

The "Boston Public" and "Star Trek: Voyager" actress said she angered Ryan by refusing. She did acknowledge infidelity on her part, which she said took place after their marriage was irretrievably broken.

In the documents Ryan denied the allegations, saying he had been "faithful and loyal" to his wife.

Jeri Lynn Ryan charged during a custody hearing that Ryan took her on surprise trips to New Orleans, New York and Paris in 1998, and that he insisted she go to sex clubs with him on each trip.

She said that after going out to dinner with Ryan in New York, he demanded that she go to a club with him.

"It was a bizarre club with cages, whips and other apparatus hanging from the ceiling," she said. She said Ryan asked her to perform a sexual act while others watched, and she refused.

She said they left and Ryan apologized to her and said it was out of his system. But then, she said, he took her to Paris and again took her to a sex club.

She said she cried and became physically ill at the club, and her husband got angry with her. She said she could never get over that incident.

"I did arrange romantic getaways for us, but that did not include the type of activity she described," Ryan said in the papers. "We did go to one avant-garde nightclub in Paris which was more than either one of us felt comfortable with. We left and vowed never to return," he told the court.

He said he felt bad for their son that she would falsely accuse him and said she said she knew he had political aspirations.

Judge Robert Schnider of Superior Court in Los Angeles ordered Friday the unsealing of portions of the records, whose release was sought by the Chicago Tribune and Chicago TV station WLS.

The two had vigorously fought the public disclosure of the files since before Jack Ryan's win in the March 16 Republican primary. They have argued making them public would be harmful to their 9-year-old son, Alex.

The Ryans said they were "disturbed and angered" by the decision but decided not to appeal.

Ryan had repeatedly assured GOP leaders the files contain nothing embarrassing enough to torpedo his bid for the Senate against Democrat Barack Obama.

Rumors about the documents' contents have been circulating since before the March 16 primary. Some of his GOP opponents raised them as an issue in that campaign, but Ryan won the primary handily.

Schnider said making the records public would prove harmful to the Ryans' son, and could prove embarrassing to the former investment banker and teacher. But he said the public deserved to know the contents.

Most of the campaign consultants interviewed saw that the first mistake Ryan made was not to unseal the child custody records as soon as their existence was known. While the contents of the divorce records ultimately destroyed Democratic U.S. Senate primary candidate Blair Hull’s campaign in March, Hull chose to volunteer the contents before the Chicago Tribune’s lawsuit forced the revelation. Sources within the Hull campaign said that media sources are able to open sealed documents 90 percent of the time, and they knew the salacious nature of the Hull divorce proceedings would eventually get out, causing them to reveal the records themselves.

“I would have told Ryan to open the records early on, right away, and get them off the table,” Leahy, who worked on dairyman Jim Oberweis’ primary campaign, said. “He didn’t do that, hoping that he would be able to keep embarrassing things covered up. Now his credibility is at stake, and now it depends on what the files actually say.”

Ryan has insisted since the beginning of the controversy that he would not open the records because they would harm his son. Republican party leaders report that he told them nothing “embarrassing” would be revealed even if the records were unsealed.

Again, he said, he was concerned only about his son’s welfare.
