1. I believe this is the organization that Maude Barlow is involved with...
a very credible organization, imo. They are fighting against having our resources being given away in NAFTA, safeguarding our sovereignty, etc.

Here is a link to a CBC article about Maude Barlow and the sale of our water:

http://www.cbc.ca/news/indepth/water/barlow.html

and another article with Maude Barlow entitled "Harper, a Bush in Tory Clothing"

2. Yes, they essentially do not want Canada to become the 51st state...
...of the U.S.A. They do not want Americans controlling the cultural values of Canada (although Canadians are materialistic as well). They are perfectly happy with their social programs and don't care if their taxes are higher than the U.S.'s. They definitely don't want anything that resembles U.S. neo-cons, although again the entire western provinces seem to have adapted very well to that mentality. This group recognizes that there are more things to life than developing every last square inch of land for strip malls, and pulling every last bit of natural resources out for the sake of consumption. They are living the vision that Henry David Thoreau gave us in his Book "Walden Pond" every day. And I suppose they would also like to see pot legalized (not true, that was just my dig). I think they are a good grassroots movement, maybe a little like Nader's ideas. There are a lot of smart Canadians north of us and we could learn a thing or two from the ones who were careful to not play hockey without a helmet.
