But o, how the mighty have fallen. Last week, Ann Coulter appeared on Hannity & Colmes looking haggard and clinically insane. The Night of the Living Dead circles underneath her eyes, the lifeless hair—it looks like she's been living on canned foods for the past two months. Ann looked like she should be pushing a shopping cart, not politicking for Bush. It wasn't just what she said—like repeatedly accusing Holocaust survivor George Soros of being an anti-Semite—it was how she said it. She laughed insanely after every sentence fragment she uttered, a clear symptom of late-stage paranoid-schizophrenia.

It's frustrating that we're left with sex as the bottom line when discussing Coulter. It's not her sexuality that is at issue--bad hair day or no--it is the completely false things that she says. Her words need to be deconstructed, not her fuckability.

Anne Coulter in the dark (like just about any other female in the dark) could certainly rub a guy into submission without much effort. I think that Mark Ames, in spite of himself, would lose the bet he makes in his article and end up having to vote for Bush.

She was not chosen for her gender any more than Laura Schlessinger was. It is true that as a female, she could get away with knocking feminism in a way that no male neocon could do with total credibility (with a female neocon audience). But that is just one set of issues. Coulter never restricted her comments to "women's issues". It wasn't about her gender. It was about her willingness to say anything without shame.

Coulter was considered good-looking by some people--as is Sean Hannity. Not every neocon can be as butt ugly as Rush or O'Reilly. And, of course, there are other female Republicans and neocons out there, but most of them do not have the complete brazenness to say whatever is the most destructive.

If you are going to trash Coulter--and she SHOULD be trashed for the lies she tells on a continuous basis--don't rush to sex. IT will backfire, especially for Democrats. We are the party that is supposed to respect women more than the Republicans. Whenever you trash a neocon type on her sexuality, you give the Limbaughs out there fuel to trash the party.

From what you've said, however, it seems that Coulter was a neocon operative before she appeared on TV. If she was pulled out of the pack and placed in that particular forum to lambaste Clinton on a "women's issue", then, yes, her gender was the reason she got air time at first. But don't equate gender with sexuality. When a NOW President gets on the air to talk about a bad law for women, she is also there because of her gender. She is not there, however, for her sexuality.

Also, the reason that Coulter continued on past the Paula Jones story is that she was able to out-shock the neocon shock jocks. She was horrible, there is no question about it. And she was factually wrong most of the time. That is the reason to go after her.

I think she was there for her willingness to say any damn thing with a certainty that could only have been born of ignorance.

She was the female Hannity, but never got the national radio/TV deals, probably because of her gender. This is not to say she didn't use sexual appeal--as did Hannity incidentally--but this was not her primary goal. IF she had wanted to be a pinup, she'd have gone to Playboy. What she wanted, it seems, was to be taken seriously as a viscious neocon, the queen of the vultures.
