Schwarzenegger Wants Stray Animals Killed Quicker (Saves CA Money)
Schwarzenegger backs speedier killing of strays
Friday, June 25, 2004 Posted: 11:34 AM EDT (1534 GMT)

SACRAMENTO, California (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger wants to repeal a state law that requires animal shelters to hold stray dogs and cats for up to six days before killing them.

Instead, there would be a three-day requirement for strays. Other animals, including birds, hamsters, potbellied pigs, rabbits, snakes and turtles, could be killed immediately.

Schwarzenegger has told the state Legislature that the changes could save local governments that operate shelters up to $14 million.

1. Oh. My. God.
Anything for a buck, eh Arnie? You vomitous piece of shit! Killing poor defenseless animals to save a buck!

I hate that Nazi bastard.

2. Don't worry.
All the animal rescue and animal rights groups have already picked up on it. It is being splashed all over the Internet. Everyone is calling for action. I doubt that Arnie will get away with this one. Plus I have posted the article to lots of other rescue groups and they will forward it on.

3. Schwarzenegger needs to be euthanized as quickly as possible
to put him out of our misery.

Really - by the time you have called all the shelters, gone looking for your lost critter, checked with the neighbors and then gone to the right shelter, your beloved dog or cat could be dead. And Arnold would happily pocket the 14 million he saved and pay for another cocktail party republican fundraiser for his pals while you are left wondering why your great state just slaughtered your best friend.

You gotta love these neo-cons -- they aren't even from the same human stock as the rest of us. Go California! Tear him the new buttcrack he so richly deserves!

5. Who waits 3 days to call the shelter?

Who'd wait three days before calling the shelter if their dog got loose? People like that don't deserve to have pets.

8. do you live in a small town?
there are several shelters here and they have lousy recordkeeping. It might be three days before you found your animal here.

Actually I take a bit of umbrage to your comment, (and I have seven very happy and spoiled critters) - why don't you go attack a republican? We're not here to attack each other.

14. In a huge metropolitan area like I live in....
We may have upwards of 20-30 shelters, if you include the city shelters, rescue societies for specific breeds, and no kill shelters.

If your animal disappears on a weekday, and you still happen to have a job in this day and age, you might spend quite a bit of time calling shelters during the day at work looking for an animal of that basic description, driving by them in the evenings to check the pens, and you STILL wouldn't be able to get them all in 3 days.

Obviously, you'd check the kill shelters first, but there are a bazillion suburbs here. And each one has its own shelter.

Your suggestion that any of us would be careless or purposely insensitive to our pets was unfortunate and unkind.

18. Unkind?
I wasn't trying to be unkind. As a lifelong pet owner, I just can't imagine anyone waiting 3 days to check a shelter for a pet they care about.

Anyway, that would be a rare situation. Except in unusual circumstances (i.e. running away in the middle of being groomed), responsible pet owners put a collar and tag on the animal so they can be notified if the pet is picked up.

21. Do you use a safety collar?
One of the reasons that this collar is safe is because it will come off the animal. This is one of the reasons why many people get a chip implant for their pets. Unfortunately, not all shelters check for the chip.

23. It's your tone.
Both I and sui told you about the circumstances in big cities. And we never said ANYTHING about waiting 3 days to look. That's not the issue. The issue is beginning the search immediately when the pet is lost, and not being able to track it down before it is euthanized.

I am a responsible pet owner, and have had my dog chipped and keep a collar on him. But the other DUer was right. Not all shelters check for chips.

He's an indoor dog. So we don't have to worry about that much.

HOWEVER. He's a big dog, and taught us quickly enough that he knows how to slip out of a collar. He escaped from us several times while out on walks.

The rescue society we got him from forbids choke collars, but we didn't have a choice. The choke collar was the only thing that would keep him from breaking and running, and he's much easier to control. He knows he can't slip out of his collar anymore.

You're being very judgmental. Things may be very cut and dried in smaller areas where there is only 1 shelter, but big cities are much different. Sadly so.

4. Fourteen million, Arnie? Spend half that much on educating the public
Edited on Fri Jun-25-04 12:09 PM by Straight Shooter
I mean sincere education. Take kids from schools to the shelters, show them these creatures who don't deserve what's happened to them. Organize classes at community centers in obedience training (most animals are put down because of behavior problems.)

And speaking of behavior problems, that's how my beloved pet got to the shelter. Her former "family" neglected her all day long and couldn't understand why she kept running away. They took her to the shelter. The shelter called me, I "rescued" her, she's been with me over 2 years now, and all it took was one month of patient but consistent training, and she's the greatest four-legged companion one could ask for.

So f*ck you, Arnie. And stop looking for solutions that don't address the real problem.

6. Rich assholes
Arnie don't care because he's a narcissistic sociopath shit who never had to care about anything else but himself.Arnie is just like Bush is.Both are incompetent failures because their priorities are inverted. So Arnie does what any abusive fuck head does, when faced with failure kill something.. he kicks the dog,'cause He doesn't want to hurt his rich buddies ,investors, funders and self and he'll make the weaker members pay more to help the rich instead of the rich paying back money to help the society that funds their wealth, and status making it possible...So what do creeps like Arnie do, they kill animals rather than raise taxes on the rich who can well afford to share.Republicans are evil.
They'd rather kill than share with others to make a better society for all..
