The State legislature was recalled to a special session to address the states current budget crisis that wasn't addressed during the normal session. It is a very solid Republican majority in both houses and a Republican (no new taxes) governor. The only thing that was accomplished was a one dollar a pack tax increase on cigarettes which now makes Alaska one of the highest tobacco tax states. It was passed by a very large majority after a lot of "evidence" and discussion on the need for such. The main need was the state's current economic woes which has been created completely with Republican controlled legislature and Administration.
