Hi DUers.
I'm a member of this radio Co-Op, and I'm posting this invitation to support any way you can...
**this is the station on which I first heard about Kunich's "Department of Peace" idea...
CHLY 101.7 fm (also found on the web at
http://www.chly.fm ). Is in desperate need of financial support, to pay some incurred debts and replace some worn out and obsolete equipment.
CHLY broadcasts from Nanaimo, BC on Vancouver Island on 101.7MHz FM, and can be heard as far south as Everett Wa.
The station is affiliated with Malaspina University College, but does not rely on the school for a significant percentage of its operating budget. In fact, CHLY is located far away from the "ivory tower" of academia, in a small one-room studio in Nanaimo's Downtown core. CHLY's mandate as a "community radio station" certainly warrants being 'in' the community.
CHLY's license and charter requires the station's programmers to provide an alternative source of news and information, as well as types of music not typically heard on commercial radio.
CHLY does its own investigative and documentary news and current affairs programming, as well as hosting feeds from some of the fine progressive organizations out there, "Between the Lines" and "Radio Free America with Dave Emory" being just two.
The station has featured exclusive broadcasts from such people as Greg Pallast and Noam Chomsky, as well as many influential feminist and Aboriginal/Metis thinkers.
The musical selections at CHLY are chosen by each program host, and range from original folk, bluegrass, and traditional blues, through Aboriginal, classic rock, techno, space-rock, industrial, 80's, Canadiana, Death Metal, and all points in-between.
A complete program schedule is available on-line at
http://www.chly.fm .
If you are able to receive this station via the airwaves, or choose to tune-in via the web, please take time to join the station's ranks during this very important membership drive.
Membership is CDN$20.00 per year (about US$15.00), and includes access to member-only give-aways, and a vote on the station's business and direction during the Annual General Meeting held every September.
If you'd like to help keep a progressive voice on the air, please donate what you can, to:
CHLY Radio Malaspina Society
2-34 Victoria Crescent
Nanaimo BC

The station is also looking for donations of broadcast-quality studio equipment, and parts, as well as office equipment and furniture.
And, for those of you DUers who are Canadian Residents, your donation is tax deductable under the "Charitable Societies Act"
Thanks, and please tune in, even if you don't donate!
