'Poor People's' activists arrested
By Scott Jenkins, Salisbury Post
KANNAPOLIS -- Police arrested four activists Friday who were members of a group protesting Pillowtex job losses outside Plant 1.
The activists are members of the Poor People's Economic Human Rights Campaign based in Philadelphia. The group is traveling to Washington to highlight what they call "economic human rights," a growing health-care crisis and job losses they blamed on free-trade deals.
"We've all got to pray for the morals of our country," activist Cheri Honkala said as a Kannapolis police officer led her away in handcuffs.
When the city officials informed the activists that if they were arrested, the county Department of Social Services would take charge of their children , Honkala angrily ordered the larger group to leave the area.
