My neighbor identifies herself as a Republican and always votes a straight ticket. Over the last year we have had many conversations about politics issues including the war. In many areas she falls on the Democratic side, she is against reckless deficit spending, she is pro choice and has recently come to believe the war could have waited until we could go in with the UN. She believes in the separation of Church and State and despite being a Christian wants a secular government. Last night she said she would vote for a conservative Democrat like Dean next time around (she knows enough to know that Dean isn’t really liberal). She said she is a Republican because she wants less government and the “new” Republican Party is about more government.

Ironically, the issue that seemed to tip the scale for her was that Rummy couldn’t find a puppet in the active military to take over the Joint Chiefs of Staff. When she learned that the military is becoming politicized by Chimp she started to become afraid.


One vote at a time. If people understand the truth we will have them.

4. A thinking Republican!

There used to be more of these people. What happened? It's nice to read stories like this, because frankly, I don't meet that many well-informed conservatives. They know all about the evil deeds of Clinton or liberals in general, thanks to Fox News and Rush, but other than that, nada.

It takes a lot to get someone to break that kind of loyalty to a party, and I really respect a person who is able to do that when they have a good reason to. I've always voted straight Democratic ticket and have yet to regret it. This is why I think Dean is our man. Anyone who can pull in conservatives, liberal lefties, and everyone in-between is going to beat Bush.

But I acknowledge her and try to point out that it has nothing to do with the current direction of the country.

To me there is no point in defending Clinton, their minds are made up. It works best for me to work hard to keep the subject current.

I try to change the discussion to less personal things (not attacking Bush) and talk about the "policies", the impact of the "policies", and how we need to get a change in the "policies" by electing people who have some understanding of us and our needs.

6. Limbaugh fan hurting.

One of my brother's in-laws is a big Rush Limbaugh listener, and since he is along haul truck driver, he spouts all the RW talk show vomit from Bortz and the rest. He is hurting due to layoffs and can't make it very well. Health insurance and prescriptions are a serious problem for him since a medical condition. We were at a church dinner where he was cramming food into his fat mouth, and between gulps of food and outbursts of liberal this and liberal that, said that he had applied for low income housing. My wife who is not as "diplomatic" as me said "Why, isn't that a liberal program? I'm surprised you would get involved with that." Dead silence at the table. Me: "Things are really bad now. There are longer lines at the food banks. Lots more homeless people. Being out of work now is tough. Bush's tax cuts didn't work. " Dead silence. "Hey, how about them Stillers?"

9. My Repug sister-in-law told me she "Hates" Bush the other night in a phone

conversation. She and her husband are lifetime Repugs....couldn't stand Clinton. We usually don't discuss politics. She blurted out that the country is going to hell and she "hates" Bush. She said he's a fake and doesn't know how to run the country.She didn't say what her husband thought, but there's one more Repug vote turned.

Dean is not a conservative democrat. Labels don't fit him well. I often thought that during his tenure as Governor of our fair state.
He's very liberal on some issues (choice and womens' rights), liberal on others, (affirmative action), center left on yet others, moderately conservative on fiscal issues, etc, etc. He's a hard guy to pigeonhole.

As of this time, I'm an undecided voter, but as a Vermonter, I like to keep the record on Dean accurate.

Really, if the tables were reversed and the Democrats were the ones pulling this anti-American bullshit, I'd have left the party 2 years ago.

Why would anyone be wedded to a political philosophy/party that is directed at destroying your wellbeing and your kid's future?

For the most part when the thoughtful ones learn the truth they begin to question what is happening. Like you, I’d have run from the Democratic Party if they behaved similarly, but I think Democrats generally are more flexible and questioning of authority.

Sometimes I think Republicans view politics more like religion, it is a matter of faith. It is very hard to reflect on convictions held as dogma for a lifetime, and it is even harder to realize that you have been bamboozled by people you trusted.

21. A lot of people think Rove just say he "likes" Dean

Many think that Rove is trying to make the Dems question their support of Dean -- e.g., gosh, if Rove wants to run Shrub against him, then Dean must be a bad candidate. When, in reality, Rove knows Dean would be tougher to beat than, say, Kerry or Edwards or, of course, Holy Joe.

I don't know if this reverse psychology theory is true or not, but I'm just saying, that's what some people have concluded
