Do yourself a favor: BUY CONASON'S BOOK
Edited on Tue Aug-19-03 11:49 AM by Skinner
I bought it Saturday, and I have to tell you it's damn good reading.

It pisses me off some (I'm about halfway through), especially when he compares today's press coverage of * to that of Bill Clinton.

He has all their numbers, and is brutally honest about the right's hypocrisy.

A lefty takes aim at right's wrongs

Ann Coulter might want to steal an advance copy of Joe Conason's "Big Lies: The Right-Wing Propaganda Machine and How It Distorts the Truth," due out next week.

The mini-skirted mouthpiece is skewered for 23 pages as Conason, the New York Observer national correspondent, barbecues her and Rush Limbaugh, Laura Ingraham, Bernard Goldberg and other angry-for-the-airwaves pundits.

Conason notes that while the 41-year-old blond may idolize anti-feminist Phyllis Schlafly, she isn't exactly a "model for her 'abstinence education' campaign. ... Sexual abstinence ... is for the poor rubes who stay home watching 'The 700 Club,' not for urbane young Republicans hanging out in saloons on Capitol Hill and the upper East Side."

The unabashed progressive notes that while the "perennially single, career-obsessed Coulter" wrote that liberals are "advancing a left-wing conspiracy to abolish the family" by "refusing to condemn ... promiscuity, divorce, illegitimacy, homosexuality," she "dated the son of Penthouse publisher Bob Guccione, and many of her closest friends are gay men."

2. I second that, CW! I got it last night - already in Chapter 2...
I was highly frustrated I could not read it during my commute this morning...maybe if I suspend it from my rear-view mirror...

Excellent. Just got done with "What Liberal Media?" and Joe's book is a great complement to Alterman.

Two   from Uncle Richardo.

4. Well hell I was going to say about the same

I just finished it Saturday morning over coffee.

Very well written and very readable.

His chapter disspelling the edge conservatives/Repubes have in patriotism over the left is a must read.
-The "founding fathers" were indeed progressives (or liberals), the Tories who supported the King and were against the revolution were conservatives.

-The most outspoken critics of entering WWII (even after Pearl Harbor and yes there were protests) were the conservative isolationists including hte "America First" group that *GASP* turned out to be a cover for Japanese and German agents inthe US. One of these agents was working out of a Repube congressman's home and OFFICE.

Oh and he completely debunks the "liberal media" LIE with actual facts- Okay the oft quoted "most reporters vote Democrat" is famous in the conservative punditry lie business by as Conason points out

WHO DECIDES WHAT GOES INTO THE PAPER? Why it is editors and publishers who are overwhelmingly conservative and/orRepublican. Of the top 30 US papers twice as many endorsed Bush in 2000 than Gore.

"Media" within 7 word of "Liberal" 489 in two years, within "conservative" 17.

Oh and the stock market does better under Dems (over the last 100 years) than under Repubes (3 studies cited).

6. I'm gonna buy it
but I don't buy into sniping like describing Coulter as, "perennially single, career-obsessed." So the fuck what? It just makes Conason look small.

8. I disagree
this woman, after all, wants us to invade countries, kill their leaders and convert them into Christianity.

9. Yes she's evil
but I don't get the connection with 'perennially single, career-minded'. Unless we're just slinging insults, which doesn't bode well for Joe's credibility.

11. I suppose he uses those terms
because she attacks others who fall into this category.

She and her gang even think women shouldn't be allowed to vote.

14. The other issue with Coulter is
she has no say whatsoever in public policy so her and the other 'mouths' are best ignored.

15. His point...
is that she beats Dems/Libs with the family values stick all the time while she freely pursues the feminist life style and cavorts with gay pals. He's simply exposing more of the Right's hypocrisy...no small matter, and you simply can't do too much of that.

10. I also don't like to descend to the level of the Rovers...
but I'll read any sentence that Joe C writes. In his book with Gene Lyons, as I understand it, no right winger could claim that any part of the book was a lie or distorted. It was a factual and thoroughly checked out book and it was phrased in responsible English. Even Lucianne had nothing to retort with, causing them all to become a 'l i t t l e' bit quiet.

I'll wait to see the context of Joe C's remarks about Ann C. - I'll give him the benefit of the doubt. He is mile high above these people in his writing and his verbal araguments on guest spots on CABAL news programs. He is adult, responsible, factual, non-hysterical.

Liberal Media." It exposes the CNBC "Pumps & Dumps" and anchors for what they were during the Bubble. For "used to be" CNBC fanatical watchers like me.......it was a great expose.....plus many other tidbits touching on folks like David Broder and those columnists whom we Dems thought were "with us."

I hope we can support any authors of books who expose these people.

Thanks Cat.......I should have Conasan's book in a couple of weeks.......Can't wait to start it!
