Nightline: scathing report from Senate Intelligence Committee re: Iraq
ABC 11:35 p.m. EST

TONIGHT'S FOCUS: A scathing report from the Senate Intelligence Committee says the key arguments that were used to justify the invasion of Iraq last year were wrong and based on false or overstated CIA analysis. So, if the Senate and the public knew then what we know now, would there have been a war?

-snip-

But today comes a scathing bi-partisan report from the Senate Intelligence Committee. The committee looked hard at the pre-war intelligence and concluded that much of it was wrong or overstated. It says intelligence analysts fell victim to "group think" assumptions. The report repeatedly lays blame at the feet of departing CIA Director George Tenet, accusing him of contorting advice to policy makers and squashing advice from other agencies.

Tonight Nightline will look at the profound criticisms of the CIA laid forth in this report. We'll hear from an array of former members of the intelligence community about how these errors could have occurred and how the gathering of intelligence works - and sometimes just doesn't work.

We often don't know how the intelligence world operates and that is the way it is largely meant to be. But when it works badly, questions are asked.

We hope you'll join us.

1. Not everyone was wrong
many were screaming at the time that there were no WMD's, that the war was not necessary. The media should instead be asking, why didn't they listen?

Doesn't matter. The weapons inspectors were in there... and this admin screwed them. End of story. Go to jail.
