...in Albuquerque tonight! The event was wonderful. About 10,000 attendees at the Hispanic Cultural Center, including our marvelous Governor Bill Richardson. Elizabeth Edwards made a real funny about how she and John sighed when Richardson visited Kerry this past week to turn down the VP position.
Teresa Kerry spoke for quite a few minutes, and she was graceful, elegant, and her soft voice was so full of compassion and dignity it completely hushed the crowd. She spoke about how the rest of the world views America not as a nation but an IDEA -- an idea that most anyone could work hard and achieve something once thought impossible.
This was a really lovely thought, sentimental though it might seem, and one that made me realize -- especially when Kerry later reiterated a similar thought -- how this election is not ONLY about how we want to take back our country from these ravening neocons, but also about how the WORLD wants up to take back our country, too, and protect them from the destructive policies and gambits of these dangerous warmongers.
When Edwards took the stage, his million megawatt smile absolutely lit up the place! He spoke easily and confidently, and told Kerry's "war stories" so Kerry wouldn't seem to be flaunting his own accomplishments. Then when Kerry took the stage, he spent some minutes talking about how much he and Edwards were actually alike: they both married beautiful, intelligent women ("We married UP, you know?", they both were lawyers, they both were named John, and (the punch line) John Edwards was named the "sexiest man in the legislature" by People Magazine, while he (Kerry) READS People Magazine. That broke everyone up, of course.
Then -- and this was abso-chenying-lutely brilliant -- Kerry talked for quite a bit about the REAL values of the democrats: caring for the children, providing health care for all, and NEVER sending our sons and daughters to die just because we want to be there. He pointed out with concrete detail after concrete detail that all other talk of values is empty; while the Democrats actually ACT ON their values.
Some loud, rude, Skinhead-looking freepers were there to heckle them, but Kerry dismissed them with the velvet glove, pointing out that we had some Republicans there who didn't want to listen, but that the Kerry/Edwards ticket was about to give the Republicans a lesson in REAL values. He then very gracefully continued his speech and ignored their rude, childish behavior. The idiot-disrupters literally skulked out with their tails between their legs -- they walked out right past me -- and shouted obsenities and made rude gestures all the while.
I'm so glad I got to hear and see Kerry and Edwards, especially Kerry. The media SO distort him, make him out to be a Botoxed frankenstein, or something, while he actually has a smile that, like Edwards', could melt the polar ice cap. He's very composed, very approachable, and seems appreciative and grateful of what Edwards can bring to the campaign.
Of course, Edwards is AMAZING! And they BOTH addressed our multicultural audience in Spanish, to the ABSOLUTE DELIGHT of the crowd. We all laughed at Kerry's statement that the question of who should be VP was even more important than, "Red or green?"
Ya gotta see this roadshow if you can! It's amazingly cheerful and folksy. And probably most surprisingly, neither Kerry nor Edwards mentioned *Bushya, *Bushya's Black House, or anyone else in the administration/cabal. This was purely uplifting and feel-good, which is quite a relief after the tons of horseshit we've had shoveled on us day in and day out since the Pretender moved into our House.
Way to go, New Mexico! Thank you, Governor Richardson! Let's move that son-of-a-bush out of Washington!
