Poll question: Clark V Dean
If someone was holding to gun to your head (not serious of course) and said you can only pick out of the two candidates on the subject line, who would it be?

87. If Dean can't stand the heat then he should get out of the kitchen
I find it amazing how upset Dean supporters get when he is criticized. That is supposed to be what our electoral process is about. The more I see and hear of Dean the more I dislike him as a possible presidential candidate.
I find it incredible that after trying to position himself as the only candidate of integrity to oppose Bush (which I found rather rather egotistical to say the least) Dean is not hinting that he will forgoe campaign finance limits just like the Shrub did after he had pledged several months ago not to. This country doesn't need another leader whose ethics change to suit the situation.

Clark is going to be the Democratic candidate so I hope Howie can deal with it without throwing one his temper tantrums!

11. Had to go with Clark.
This was a tough call, though. Here's my rationale:

Clark is absolutely certain to trounce Bush. He's as strong a candidate as we could hope for, from what I've seen so far.

Dean, I'm only 50-75% sure could win. We are up against Rove, after all, and Rove can make hay with the slightest misstatement. Clark simply has more experience in front of a camera, speaking to the center. I imagine he would make a good diplomat, which would be a welcome change.

But I'm hoping for a Dean/Clark or a Clark/Dean ticket. Either would be a winner.

Plus we get to keep all our senators and representatives!

12. It would be interesting to know how many Clark supporters...
voted Dean. I found myself in that position, because of one Ignorant Asshole that's been supporting Clark. Yes, I know it's not fair to Clark, but as long as that Ignorant Asshole is accepted here in DU, then I'll probably continue to support my second choice. I HATE FREEPERS and that's exactly what this Ignorant Asshole comes across as.

this is not the real world, little v.c.; this is teensy eensy insular du. Out in the real world, when and if Clark declares, there'll be an actual contest of ideas, campaigning, fund raising, etc. Then we'll see. None of us can know who's more electable, Clark or Dean. I've read your prognostications, founded on little beyond your endless supply of hot air- or at least I've tried to- your writing skills are nearly as limited as your analysis of the political landscape.
I look forward to learning more about Clark, but with boorish supporters like you, he scarcely needs detractors.

119. Hey Clar, do you knock guys out of wheelchairs too.
I admit, having dylexia does limit my ability to review and correct my posts, as well as explain my position well in writting.

However, I did rank in the top 1% of political attitude in the nation in HS, and first in my HS, and have a Political Science degree.

So I think in that area I know little bit about what I am talking.
Granted, I will concede to you I have bad writting skills because Dyslexia prevents me from reading and writting as clearly as I should.

So if you want to attack me there go ahead. But if you want to be making bets on my political predictions, I am totally game. I love making money that way. Like the Clarence Thomas Confirmation prediction of 52-48. People in my HS thought that was funny when I said that. But the next week, they felt pretty stupid.

My prediction:
Clark will the nomination
Clark will beat Bush in 2004 by a wide electoral margin

Davis will be out of office by January.

The Democrats will lose one Seat in the US Senate.

Want to bet on it? I will be happy to take you money.

Unbelievable, a respected poster on DU comes out and trashes Dean supporters because they think "their" candidate has a chance. Although I have been toying with supporting your candidate, this is the exact reason that I won't. There is nothing more Republican than trying to pigeonhole our candidates. For those of you that want to do it...FUCK YOU...it is absolutely freeperesque to try and paint any of our candidates in a GOP light.

I'll continue to support Dean, and will now probably support him even stronger, thanks to the freeper mentality that has been allowed by the moderators.

Just like McGovern.

Wishing doesn't get your candidate into office. Votes do. Clark can get them all the way up and down the political spectrum. From slightly conservative to extremely liberal. That is about 70% of the popular vote. Clark will only likely get 55% though.

your argument is so convincing. Dean got 800 young voters at a single event, Clinton won with 65% of the 18-25 vote. Dean is the man that will energize the base and first time voters. Dean will win by 60%. Gore narrowly defeated Bush and got 55% of the 18-25 vote.

128. To Kahuna and VoteClark
Both of you are being rather insensitive to the feelings of others and are probably losing votes for Clark instead of gaining them. Get an attitude change! DUers support each other and democratic candidates.

There should be rejoicing over the very clever ripostes by Clark tonight on Scarborough Country. Actually the whole interview was probably the best a candidate or semi-candidate has given. The best answer of all was the one about Kosovo. Totally brilliant, IMHO. However, you do not need to beat DUers over the head and try to diminish their very wonderful advocacy of their candidates. All democrats are needed to beat the pugs.

Everyone, support your candidates with dignity and do not take potshots at fellow dems. We are not the enemy.

I voted for Clark; however, I support Dennis Kucinich, just for your curious information.

Dean is a used car salesman. Always bending the truth or just plain out lying.

Clark, while I don't know much about him....seems like a more honest person from what I've seen of him.

I don't think I'd vote for either though if they were to get the Dem nomination...just aren't liberal enough for my tastes...even if I did have a gun pointed to my head. But since I really hate Dean and his lies...I support Clark in this poll.

This country needs the "domestic" tranquility through change that
Dr. Howard Dean can supply and an equally strong view toward foreign policy issues. Mr. Selected's policies and feeble-mindedness have this country eating dust at home and abroad. I hope WC is not just providing additional tactical divisiveness among Democrats and will come around to these same conclusions.

Again, I say that Dean is probably gonna win this poll, but this is a good idea because this is probably how it will end up eventually. I was thinking about this the other day. Seems to me that Dean will get most of the Kucinich people and Clark will get everybody else. That's probably been pointed out already though.

Let's remember though that clark is as yet undeclared. It will be quite a while before his candidacy builds to full strength.

120. Clark offers a better contrast to Bush, however...
Edited on Mon Aug-18-03 11:39 PM by AP
...I really believe that if you run a general it's basically a concession that the Republican view of the world (that national security and fighting people overseas are the only important issues) is the correct view of the world. Conceding so much territory to Republicans would be hard to overcome. Afterall, they're way ahead of Demcrats on the issues in most people's minds. Also, I don't see how minority and working class voters would get energized by Clark -- he doesn't speak to the issues that are important to them (class and opportunity). But, compared to Dean, Clark is probably the better candidate because he has nothing in his past that he has to explain away, and he seems like a guy who was worked incredibly hard at every step of his life, and has really committed himself to excellence, and it doesn't seem like anyone has ever given him anything he didn't earn for himself.

Ideally, the Democrats should be looking for someone like FDR -- someone who, in the most troubling times, gave people hope through gentleness, kindness and compassion, and who appealed to Americans' best insticts for hard work and a desire to see your fellow citizens' circumstances improved. That's the kind of candidate who's going to shake Americans from the fucking haze of despondency and disgust.

136. Here's My Take
I don't think there is a dime's worth of difference on the big issues bewtween Dean and Clark.

Dean and Clark are New Democrats no matter how much they embrace or eschew the label. They are pro civil rights, fiscally moderate , free trade, and internationalist in their foreign policy

There is a big difference in the positions of these two fellas and Kucinich, Sharpton, and Moseley Braun, and to a lesser extent Dick Gephardt.

So, if you want the real left wing candidate don't choose the Doctor or the General choose those guys and gal.

That being said, I will support the most liberal and the most electable Democrat in the primaries-

General Wesley Clark

148. Went with Clark...this time.
I'm starting to swing to Clark. As someone from the rather extreme left of the party, I've been a rather tepid Dean supporter. I certainly haven't written him off. But, I was thinking about Clark this morning - there's a lot to be said for him. From what I know about him, his positions seem liberal enough for me to live with. Much as I view Dean.

The difference is that Clark comes to the table without a record that can be distorted and quibbled over by the repubs. I'm very leary of a military man, but Clark seems to have a pretty good perspective on it.

But, the main reason I'm swinging towards him, is that the repubs would have a hell of time trying to attack him. They couldn't rely on the BS "soft of defense" bogeyman. Or, anything in his record. They would have to go after him on the issues other than Iraq and the bogus "war on terrorism". And, on domestic issues, just about every one is a loser for BushCorp. Health care, the environment, tax cuts, the economy, women's rights, minorities, you name it. Beyond that, I believe he would mop the floor with the clueless fratboy.

In short, he's looking very electable, and one that could do that amazing thing of uniting the party. Selecting a woman or a minority as VP would, IMO, make him damn near unbeatable.

I'm not "committed" to any candidate at this time, and if I felt that my first choice had a chance, I would vote for Sharpton. But, I can vote with a clear conscience for Clark..or Dean.

151. Your VP specs are more likely...
But wouldn't Dean make a great attack-mode VP candidate! The chimp and Chaney would get a bad case of the red-ass, if either or both stick around for the showdown.

157. I'd have no problem with Dean as VP but
I'd rather see a woman or African American. One of the things I like about Clark is his dignified manner. Quite a contrast to the inarticulate, dumbass, fratboy with his goofy smirk and phoney tough guy "Bring 'em on.", "We're gonna smoke 'em out.", rambo, strutting. I think that if the Democrats bring dignity to the debates it'll make Rove's boys look like a couple of adolescent loudmouths.

As for the cavetroll Cheney, I'd think any Democrat could make him look like the fatcat, oilrich, sneak, that he is.

161. OK.
Harold Ford? Getting too dignifying to Repugs, lately, for my taste.

I got it! Dr. Laura Tyson. (sigh)

Bolster the domestic econ flank. And she handles KKKudlow nonothings as fine and effectively as Clark dressed down Joe the Scar yesterday.

That's the ticket.

152. The Thing I'm THRILLED About
Is that DU is left-of-the-mainstream when it comes to the Democratic Party. If it's this close here, I am hoping that the more moderate Democrats (and independents, where eligible) will boost Clark to a clear victory in the primaries.

Assuming, of course, that he runs at all. ;-)

Frankly, I'm not really sure of my opinion on Clark. The man hasn't even commited to run yet and he hasn't made all of his platforms clear. I should like to hear him speak on important issues.

158. I like them both
but I have obviously decided to back Clark if he runs. There is a great thread in GD that is addressed to Clark supporters but has value for everyone here at DU about supporting their candidates. I hope Clark will run and win, but if Dean is the nominee I will work my but off for him.

Both of these people are strongly commendable and I would have no problem supporting either for the nomination. However, I must say that the behavior of certain Clark supporters is getting annoying.

But I voted for Dean-- before I was for Clark, before then, I was for Dean.

You posters that are trying to create division between Clark and Dean need to rethink your tactics. There's little doubt in my mind that this is the 2004 ticket, so keep that in mind when you root for either Clark or Dean.
