Is the President hitting the sauce again?
"Dubya came in at Number One in Democratic Underground's weekly list of The Top Ten Conservative Idiots. This, of course, is farily routine, as was the President's non-reaction to Thursday's electricity crisis. "It's becoming a ritual of sorts," DU writes; "disaster strikes the Northeast, and George W. Bush is nowhere to be found."

Some of my web buddies at Atlantic Online Post and Riposte say that when he finally appeared on television Bush appeared to be drunk. He was flushed, wobbly, and wiped his nose with the back of his hand, people said. He rocked from side to side and was red in the face.

How much black coffee did Karl Rove have to pour down Shrub's throat before he could stand in front of a camera?

Maybe I'm being unfair. Maybe the President was not drunk. Maybe he's just a drooling idiot. Who knows? The White House reporters wouldn't tell us even if they saw Shrub chugging a fifth of Jack Daniels."

(I was thinking about this while reading the thread of his "comments" following this morning's bombing. Did he start his day with a few Bloody Mary's or Mimosas? Then I was thinking: Do I want him a dry drunk or a wet one? Does it make any difference? As if there isn't enough to think about...)

1. I think 'still' is the operative word here
I think he's been doing it all along. The man has no mral fiber.

3. I agree he has no moral fiber...
But what does that have to do with drinking? Can some AA DUers opine here? Does it matter to the world if he is a dry drunk or a wet one? At least if he's "wet" his handlers know not to leave him alone for even a second. Or am I all wet?

5. Drinking does not mean you have no moral fiber,
but telling the American people that you quit drinking when you turned 40 when it is a lie means you have no moral fiber.

17. moral fiber
and alcoholism aren't the same.

It matters a lot to the world if he is still drinking. What if he insults some head of state in a blackout? He drives his truck in Texas - he could kill someone. The possibilities are endlessly awful where he's concerned, and increased tenfold if he's drinking.

I'm of the opinion, based on his appearance, demeanor, and speech that he is still drinking. He's got the gin blossoms on his face, and that midsection weight gain may acutally be his liver swelling. Alcohol causes permanent brain damage. He may well be headed there, too.

His handlers do a sucky job, btw. And so does the press. Someone ought to be mentioning his obvious impairment, disheveled appearence, and inability to stand erect at a podium.

I repeat, alcoholism has nothing to do with moral fiber. Alcoholics don't drink because they want to. They drink because they have to.

2. and again and again and again.
Seriously though, he is clearly under the influence of something. Booze, drugs or, as another DUer suggested, he is sick.

4. Trying to Quit !!!!
I definately had the impression (and this is the first time) that he was drinking in San Diego. All safely tucked away with cronies of the same beat, and suddenly the lights went out. Whats a poor guy gonna do, huh????

6. That's how an egomaniac copes with reality.
I remember reading that Bush was shocked to discover that the 2000 election wasn't a landslide in his favor. I think the "free speech zones" and the softball questions at his so-called press conferences are desperate measures to protect him from the truth - that a huge segment of the population hates his guts. It looks like the facade is collapsing.

scroll down to Multimedia video

and c-span has the completer version, w/questions at end.

The clip I wish I could find is aWol on his return from Africa trip, TRYING to walk from Marine 1 to WH. Gotta be ludes, or juice or something. More than jet-lag.

14. He looks that way on a regular basis
Not every time-he seemed sober for the sotu lies. He looked really messed up on 9-11, and the nose-wiping indicates possibly something less legal than alcohol.

16. He looked horrible, but not necessarily drunk
More like he'd had a seizure or something. My sound card wasn't working so I had to go on body language and he looked like he was about the fall over and was scared and confused. I was on a medication that caused seizures as an adverse side effect (so I had to go off them) so I know what it feels and looks like.

18. I can believe he's drinking.
It numbs the old conscience that's nagging him about all those people who have died because of his greed and stupidity.

23. One DU-er had the right idea, IMHO.
He's got some kind of illness that the doctors don't know how to treat. So sometimes he's all snappy at reporters and makes cruel jokes to and about people; sometimes he's euphoric "A great year, wasn't it?"; sometimes he speaks sooooo s-l-o-w-l-y....depending on the medication the doctors are trying out on him.

Of course, some medications just bring out his not-so-latent nastiness, while others just show him for the teleprompter reader he is.

Wouldn't surprise me if he was drinking or drugging on the side, and they are trying to combat this at the same time by scheduling ego-feeding fundraisers and "speeches" at designated friendly locations.
