KS Governor restores state hotline for child abuse (was "privatized")
Call me a Roosevelt “New Deal” Democrat, but I still believe government “of, for, by the people” is the only institution capable (or willing) to serve and protect the public’s interest. Sorry, Privateers, you’re “solutions” are simply not working…

From the Topeka Capitol Journal, July 19, 2003:

"SRS hotline to restore schedule"

Because of budget cuts, the Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services had contracted out the hotline to a private company and its hours of operation were scaled back. Calls weren't being answered by professionals during overnight hours or on weekends or holidays.

Although the hotline is being answered from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday, after hours, an answering service simply takes down a caller's name and telephone number. In the event of an emergency overnight or on weekend or holidays, callers were advised to call 911.

…..
The hotline will return to full-time operation on Aug. 19. Sebelius said SRS, the state's social welfare agency, will spend the next month getting the 13 employees in place to operate the hotline.

And the Governor delivered on her promise, Kansas Public Radio announced this morning.
