New chant for the first ammendment zones from Neil Young's Greendale
that streeted today.

From song Sun Green the bullhorned

"Hey Mr. Clean
You're dirty now too"

Taunting, tribal, repetitive, simple.

Love to be part 200 folks w/ bullhorns and another 200 hand drummers drilling on that outside the WH for 6 or 7 hours....

1. Amazing fucking record/opera
I saw it live two weeks ago...I was awestruck. He hates ClearChannel, he hates the energy companies, he hates the recall, he hates the war, he hates the media, and he especially hates W. I think he captured in Greendale a portrait of America in 2003.

2. My wife got to see it in St. Louis
but I'm a here working in Louisiana. The release is phenomenal in all it's political subtext, cuz at first you think it's just some cornball downhome Mayberry schtick. And upon only one listen, there may be a bit of clunkiness and longish song here and there, but goddamn does it turn into a shotgun blast towards all you mentioned above by mid point. I only listened once, so maybe there's stuff I missed in the earlier half now that I know the score.

Plus, CD come packaged at regular retail price w/ DVD of Young doing every song from the song-cycle, what have you, solo/accoustic in England. Haven't gotten to that yet.

Did that bull horn phrased bit, repeated over and over in the next to last song, stay with you from the show?

I finished my listen about an hour ago and I literally can't get it out of my head.

Long live the Horse and their shaman...

4. Yeah, the bullhorn schtick really stayed with me for about a week after
It's infectuous.

I think that some of his commentary was too subtle for most of the audience to pick up on. Which might of been a good thing, considering this is Houston.

One of the best lines came during an encore performance of "Rockin' in the Free World.":

"and our boys are dyin' everyday cuz we never had a plan..."

Really, really good stuff.

3. Do we have an Awakening?
This could be very good news indeed. His web site suggests something is happening this Saturday.

http://www.neilyoung.com/greendale_frames.html

"sun green" by neil young

sun green started makin' waves
on the day her grandpa died
speakin' out against anything
unjust or packed with lies

she chained herself to a statue of an eagle
in the lobby of powerco
and started yellin' through a megaphone
"there's corruption on the highest floor"

suits poured out of elevators "they're all dirty"
phoneheads began to speak "you can't trust anybody"
but security couldn't get her down
she was welded to the eagle's beak

sun green leaned into that megaphone
and said, "truth is all i seek"
security brought in some blowtorches
news cameras recorded the speech

"when the city is plunged into darkness
by an unpredicted rolling blackout
the white house always blames the governor,
sayin', 'the solution is to vote him out'"

on top of that great bronze eagle
sun's voice was loud and clear
she said, "powerco is workin' with the white house
to paralyze our state with fear"

it was a golden moment golden moment
in the history of tv news
no one could explain it
it just got great reviews

"hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too"

the imitators were playin'
down at john lee's bar
when sun went down to see 'em
someone followed her in a car

so now when she goes dancin'
she has to watch her back
the FBI just trashed her room
one of them kicked her cat

the damn thing scratched his leg
and he had to shoot it dead
and leave it lyin' in a puddle of blood
at the foot of sun green's bed

"hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too"

john lee's was rockin'
the imitators drove it home
sun was dancin' up a heatwave
for a while she was all alone...

when up walked a tall stranger
he shadowed her move to move
in perfect unison
a supernatural groove

he took her by the hand
and the room began to spin
he said, "i'm earth... earth brown
you know the shape i'm in

i'm leavin' tonight for alaska
and i want you to come in the spring
and be a goddess in the planet wars
tryin' to save the livin' things"

"i'm ready to go right now,"
sun green told earth brown
"let's go back to my place,
pick up my cat and leave this town behind"

hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too

next day sun green got busted for pot
and it made the headline news
but then the charges all got dropped
and the story got confused

she'd still like to meet julia butterfly
and see what remedy brings
and be a goddess in the planet wars
tryin' to save the livin' things

but that might not be easy
livin' on the run
mother earth has many enemies
there's much work to be done

"hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too
hey mr. clean, you're dirty now too"

5. No f---ing way
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 12:35 AM by darkstar
I was too freaked to even click on the link. Seriously, I've never had goosebumps for upwards of a minute in my life.

You don't have to come back and tell me. I'll get there soon enough, but if it does have to do with this song specifically and this chant, I'm gonna need 48 hours of observation cuz I've been dancing around in my house sing this bit feeling like the worm has turned for me on a personal level, that, silly as it sounds, this song about a young girl who finally stands up and calls bullshit on the WHOLE FUCKING DEAL, followed by her taunting, sneering chant has "awakened" me from my own spiralling, numbing sense of helplessness.

Hey--quick flash--how about a series of flash mobs things nationwide centered on a message as simple as this?

On edit: Just read lyrics, missed in distortion of listen:

"when the city is plunged into darkness
by an unpredicted rolling blackout
the white house always blames the governor,
sayin', 'the solution is to vote him out'"

I AM gonna need some help....

6. Sorry, Merlin, some help needed
I can't get page to load in Netscape or Explorer. What does it allude to?

And yet another point. This record loops at the end without stopping. I played the Sun Green song again on my computer and let it play through the last song. It's not a hidden track simply broken by silence, it's a loop. Now I'm not the hippest young hipster--I look forward to Neil Young relases--so I wouldn't know exactly, but do many CDs use this trick? I've heard plent w/ the secret track approach and recall a few on vinyl that employed a constiuous inner groove to the same effect, but not quite certain how this is achieved w/out being reflected as a chapter. The windows media reads 00:00 as w/ first song highlighted as if ts ready to play first song.

(Sorry mods. I'll move this to the Lounge after this if it remains apolitical after this....)

7. How did you even get to a recording?
He's using ShockWave or something on his web site and it's got all those really subtle, hip elements hollywood likes to "impress" people with, so I'm not surprised if it causes problems on some browsers.

You probably need a shockwave Flash player. You can download it at:
http://www.macromedia.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash&P5_Language=English

But, where did you find music, darkstar? I only found lyrics. I'd love to actually hear the thing.

8. Sorry, over at lounge
The page wouldn't load at Neil's site, but the CD went on sale today. And in addition to record, it comes w/ DVD (stereo, 5.1 and DTS!) of solo performance of the songs from somwhere's in England (having paid $14.99, seemingly for free). Loop I refer to is on the audio disk.
