am i seeing things???
Internet problems keeps timing stuff out so having trouble today, but saw briefly on Yahoo that stocks were up amid rumours that OBL might have been captured. Not only did i not find that anywhere else, I just checked back to the Yahoo business section and that blurb is gone, replaced by completely different business news.

1. BRIEFING.COM also mentioned the rumor
11:30 ET Dow -23, Nasdaq -1, S&P -0.65: Although intelligence of yesterday's bombings incited only a muted reaction from the market, the rumor of Bin Laden's capture has lifted all of the major averages within reach of their respective session highs and the Nasdaq and the S&P 500 to their best levels of the morning... As a result, the oil services, banking, transportation, utility, retail, biotech, disk drive, networking, and computer hardware sectors, some of which had previously been in negative territory, are finding themselves above the watermark... The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq are currently right below the unchanged line... NYSE Adv/Dec 1375/1594... Nasdaq Adv/Dec 1240/1597.

2. Yes, you're seeing things...
The Dow is down, NASD is up, both slightly with NO news or rumor of OBL being captured. Another lazy August day on Wall Street, with the only "story" being Hewlett Packard disappointing with earnings.

3. Did you happen to catch the DATE of that blurb?
It wasn't 8/20/2004 was it? If it was, please reprot to Guantanamo for your "cleansing".

Before you write me off, remember the already prepared obit for raygun, someone (bfee) knows the "future".

6. No, it's today's date alright, 8-20-03
But I would think that something like a BinLaden capture would rate at least a mention from Drudge...maybe even a siren or two.

9. Obituaries of elderly prominent people. . .
are routinely prepared ahead of time. Only the unknowable pertinent data (date of death, cause, place, etc.) remains to be filled in before publication. This is done so that fully-researched obits can be run at a moment's notice. Check out the NYT's obit on Bob Hope: It was written by a man who died before Hope did.

Blue Chips Down on HP Results, Nasdaq Up
By REUTERS

Filed at 12:41 p.m. ET
NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. blue chips declined on Wednesday, weighed by disappointing results from Dow component Hewlett-Packard Co. (HPQ.N), but gains in software companies gave the tech-laden Nasdaq a slight boost.
All three major U.S. stock gauges opened lower, but pared losses by late morning on rumors that U.S. forces had captured al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. A U.S. official who asked not to be identified told Reuters it was ``absolutely not true'' that bin Laden had been captured.
``I think the market was improving on a rumor that we caught bin Laden again, which makes it like an even 25 times that we have caught him so far,'' said Craig Cummings, a partner at Cantor Fitzgerald, noting the same rumor has spread through financial markets several times this year.<snip>
