70. I'm seriously considering moving back to South Africa where
I grew up. I would move back to Cape Town which is fast becoming one of the coolest trendiest cities in the world. I've travelled to many parts of the world and I've never been in a more beautiful city than Cape Town.

14. I was surprised to see 4 people voting Mexico
unless you are rich and can afford living in a beach house it is nice, other then that it is a dump. I've been there a couple of times and it wasn't pretty, I remember kids coming up to me with cups in there hands asking me for change. People on the street trying to sell me silver chains, told him no, he offered to lower the price. I said no again and he lowered the price of 10 silver chains to $20. I told him I didn't have the money and he ended up calling me "cheap". It is not a great place well, 95% of the country. You do have Cancun and beach houses.

17. Lots of American expats are very happy in Mexico
You learn the culture, like in any country. It's much less expensive to live there, even with an occasional "gift" to the local officials. Certainly cheaper than the level of campaign contribution necessary to get fair treatment under Bush.

I've only spent time in the Yucutan, Quintana Roo - can't speak for the rest of Mexico - but I really liked the people there - also the food, the music, the arts and crafts & the Mayan ruins to explore.
However, I'm just about at the retirement stage - have to admit I couldn't move there if I had to find employment.

With the money you make selling your house here you can buy a mansion over there...all you gotta do then is setup a web business that sells to U.S. customers...make about 35 grand in US dollars and you can maintain your lifestyle...

yeah I know it sounds simplistic but it's not very well thought out...I'm just pulling it out of my ass as I type...imagine what you could do if you really planned it out..

38. Many Mexican state capitals are charming and livable
Zacatecas is astounding-- exquisite colonial architecture in dramatic mountain scenery. Guadalajara, San Luis Potosi, Ciudad Victoria, Merida, Chihuahua, all struck me as desirable places to live. Some I didn't see, like Guanajuato, Queretaro, and Oaxaca, get unanimous rave reviews from tourists. Jalapa sounds wonderful too. Cancun was the place I considered a hellhole.

But Cancun is a place most Americans would consider beatiful, I am more into scenary, culture stuff like that which is why I love Arizona. I never been to Cancun but people told me it was beatiful and it was basically a twin city of Miami.

50. Cancun is nasty. How someone could compare it to Miami is just bizarre...
but I agree, Merida is lovely... Muchas Colores! The city of many colors. I happened to fall in love with Villadolid as well, the mayan indians, and with the itsy bitsy tiny villages at the topas on the side roads back to the coast. The gorgeous little huts, the palapas, and the cemetaries. We saw some gorgeous cemetaries as we meandered around. They were hypnotic!

It's a shame most north americans have such a narrow view of our american neighbors to the south, but it's probably better that way.

I do so wish too that north americans were educated enough to know that mexicans aren't latinos or hispanic, they're mexican. People from el salvador are el salvadoran, and people from Belize are Belize, and so on. The terms latino and hispanic indicate the conquest by the euros, and deprive mexicans of their heritage, and its actually a genuine insult to the glories of mexicana. Not all people living in mexico were mixed with the euros.

And not all mexicans make tacos.

Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 03:51 PM by VermontDem2004
I don't have a narrow view of Mexico I ACTUALLY BEEN THERE!!!! I SEEN IT!!!
I know Mexicans aren't latinos or hispanic. Plus, I probaly know more history of Mexico then you do. But when the census sends you a form, they don't ask whether you are a Mexican or a hispanic. The only option they give you is hispanic which is a reason why I said 30% of the population is hispanic when referring to that they were Mexicans. I know the difference between a Puerto Rican, a Native American, and a Mexican so can you get beyond this? I have friends who are Mexican.

I know not all Tacos are made by Mexicans but what are Tacos? Are tacos mexican food or are they not? If not, why is it that I can find Tacos in all the parts of Mexico I have visited.

39. Excuse the fukc out of me, but most of mexico is not a dump. MOST of
mexico is alive and vibrant, with rich, colorful history, traditional, kind and considerate people. There are amazing towns, astounding food, stunning architecture and mind boggling art, from ancient to modern, rivaling anything in the USA.

Cancun isn't mexico. Cancun is a landfill in mexico for americans to waste their money on. IT is a dump, indeed, for real! Trust me, they keep you imprisoned in the hotel zone so you don't trash the glories of the Yucatan with white man's ways.

You seem to think that everyone in mexico is screaming to get into america, and you're completely wrong. MOST people in mexico actually live well and prosper there, with real jobs, real houses, real families. Go figure. It's not all Tijuana border towns and whore houses, despite the myths.

Anyone who has limited their view of mexico to landfills like cancun is obviously narrow minded and inexperienced, and has no right or place to make such nasty assumptions about it. Sounds a little racist to me in fact. People like that think that anyone with a tan is mexican too, go figure.

But you know what? Don't go to mexico, stay far away. We don't want people like you there anyway, ruining it for the rest of us, demanding pizzas and hamburgers.

44. Your post is so laughable
I have been there and not just once, but many times. I have been to Tijuana, but also been to Nogales, Tacupeto, El Rosario(which is a very nice town), Moctezuma, Chihuahua(which is decent compared to most of Mexico but not an ideal place to live), and many other places. I didn't say everyone or MOST people but a lot of people are trying to get into Mexico everyday, if you do not know that then you are obviously living under a rock. I seen more homeless people then I ever imagined, the houses are built like matchboxes.

Now about the racist part, I live in Mesa, Arizona where the hispanic population is 30%. I have lots of Mexican friends, probaly 10x more then you do. So I can tell the difference between a Mexican and someone with a tan so don't say "People like that think that anyone with a tan is mexican too, go figure." Now, Tijuana I never been there but I have been to many parts of Mexico which aren't pretty. From what I have seen on tv and from what I heard it is like Miami and is beatiful.

But you know what? Don't go to mexico, stay far away. We don't want people like you there anyway, ruining it for the rest of us, demanding pizzas and hamburgers.

From this post you wrote like you actually are Mexican. I love all sorts of Mexican foods, it is my favorite type of food. I especially love Tacos. I am probaly the least racist person here, alot of people who immigrated from Mexico would not say it is the perfect place to live like you try to paint it as or otherwise they wouldn't be trying to enter into this country in the first place.

63. You mean the white man has brought peace, prosperity and glories
to mexico?

Or should I extol the virtues of a pizza hut on every corner, and TGIF's every six blocks? How about some McDonalds, or a coca cola factory? You think these are assets to the mexican culture?

Did you know there is virtually NO independent cocao production in Mexico? Or vanilla? It's all owned by carnation and nestle now, a swiss, white man's company. That's an example of the contribution of the whites/europeans to mexico.

Just an observation, but without going into massive detail, it seems to me that every time whites and euroes have attempted anything in other countries such as mexico, they merely exploit, pillage, loot and convert. Not a lot of benefit of any of that to anyone born in mexico.

No, that's not what I mean and not what I said.

Or should I extol the virtues of a pizza hut on every corner, and TGIF's every six blocks? How about some McDonalds, or a coca cola factory? You think these are assets to the mexican culture?

Why don't you ask the Mexicans who patronize those businesses if you should extol them or not?

Did you know there is virtually NO independent cocao production in Mexico? Or vanilla? It's all owned by carnation and nestle now, a swiss, white man's company. That's an example of the contribution of the whites/europeans to mexico.

No, that's an example of something done with Mexicans and 'whites/europeans'. Carnation didn't send in an army to get the job done.

Just an observation, but without going into massive detail, it seems to me that every time whites and euroes have attempted anything in other countries such as mexico, they merely exploit, pillage, loot and convert. Not a lot of benefit of any of that to anyone born in mexico.

Although I have never been there, Canada is America, imo. Our two countries should just merge. Canadians probably wouldn't like that, though. <smile>

60. Oh, I can't share that information on a public forum
Then the Busheviks will know where I will be.

Of course I might just stay and fight when Crunch Time comes.

74. i ask that same question...
as i live in scotland, and that is NOT "england", it seems rather narrow. Perhaps like most yanks, the term "england" is being used to mean the whole united kingdom of wales, england, NI and scotland.

Indeed there should be a few additions:

switzerland
australia
pacific island chains
new zealand
costa rica
chile
france
nederlands
germany
denmark
sweden
finland
iceland
norway
baltic republics

geesh, all of the EU has more answerable and realistic democracy than the nations that the bushishta's are touting as "democratic".

Also, india...

These threads pop up every week and they are rather tiresome at times.... as they deal with perception of foreign nations as some type of great escape, rather than as a place "not foreign". When all of these nations become "not foreign", it is readily appearant that bad governance is a global problem, and that unhindered corporatism has been given the lead to do as it pleases the world over... with little tiny democratic nations hardly in a position to vote or be democratic for that matter.

Bottom line, the world is economic. Make a good living wherever you can, and you can afford the house where you always wanted to be.... The hidden crime of the body-bag conservatives is to decimate the economic viability of those who are true opposition (meaning those who support democratic values) and using plutocracy to undermine democracy to roll the americas back to the times of pre-1900's trusts ruling the earth. ha!

For a few years only, of course.

And everywhere in the current EU.

Maybe Japan, but the language would be a problem.
