OH Sec of State delays BBV machine purchases?
Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 04:10 PM by Bushfire
According to a post on the Yahoo Diebold message board, the AP just announced his decision to delay mandating (on edit: purchases of BBV machines) for the March 2004 primary, and recommending Optical Scan machines. This is great news if true, but I can't find the AP link to go along with it.

You might also want to see a certain author smack down some naysayers while you are over there.

1. I heard a debate on the CA recall that discussed BBV
It was a guy from the CATO Institute and a woman from the ACLU. Ms. ACLU wants the CA recall delayed until HAVA "improvements" can be made in CA. The CATO guy started talking about how the touchscreens have been studied and they're not reliable, so waiting won't improve anything. Ms. ACLU said punch cards have such a high error rate that anything would be an improvement. CATO guy failed to mention that there is NO WAY to measure the error rate in touchscreens.

I was shocked and amazed that ACLU was on the wrong side of this issue (EV). They were trying to stop the recall but it put them on the wrong side of EV. We have to get to them. They have to change their position on this.

This was on NPR - probably a local show, can't remember.

2. interesting points on federal funding of the BBV machines

Congress voted several billion dollars to states for upgrading their equipment, but hasn't actually put the money in the budget -- at least, not most of it.

Perhaps this is one avenue to slow down this bulldozer -- ask your congressperson to postpone or cancel the federal funds.
