Edited on Wed Aug-20-03 10:32 PM by Clete
.

It's to accompany an article in the new issue of Gentlemens Quarterly Magazine attesting to Bush's religious fervor.

Someone mentioned in another thread that we have become Romans and the California election was our circus. Considering the Roman emperors often claimed to be gods, why is Bush now being depicted as the Son of God?

This is truly awful.

and goes into some whole new area of abject ignorance and stupidity.

Whoever dreamed up that picture needs a windowectomy. That's where you get a piece of glass sewn over your navel so you can see when your head is stuck up your ass.

On edit: I'm certainly not offended by it, and I would HOPE it's supposed to be satire, but to me it's just plain stupid.

8. Oh....you should warn people about this. I didnt' click on the GQ link to
this story today because I thought the comparison sounded awful and I wasn't in the mood to see bush compared to Christ. Now I clicked on this and had to see it when I didn't want to.

It's grotesque. I don't find it funny.......mostly because they portray him doctored up to look like Jesus.

I might find it funny if "MoPaul" here on DU had done it in characture style.....but even then because Bush thinks he is Jesus or God, I find the picture offensive. I don't think it's appropriate for a major magazine like GQ. I don't care what the article says.

But, I also know that many DU'ers and others will find it funny.

I just wish you had alerted. A warning like "Some Christian DU'ers MAY Find this photo Offensive."

Notice I said: May. Then I could have spared myself from seeing it. :-(

16. What offends me is
because I was raised a Catholic although I am an ex now, I know that these are sacred holy pictures that Catholics light candles in front of and pray to. It is really offensive to me even as an ex-catholic. What next, Katherine Harris as the Virgin Mary?

37. Not to pick nits, but...
... we Catholics do not "pray to" icons. Icons are meant to put us in mind of holy personages, and thereby facilitate focused prayer.

Same as if you have a photo of a dead relative on your mantle. You don't think that the photo really IS your dead relative, it just reminds you of them, and that's a good thing.

BTW, the Bush-as-Jesus picture is offensive and disturbing to me. But I think some good could come of it. Perhaps it will make people try to think of even ONE way in which Bush is actually like Jesus, and when they are able to come up with ABSOLUTELY NOTHING, they might start to get a clue.

"It's to accompany an article in the new issue of Gentlemens Quarterly Magazine attesting to Bush's religious fervor."

Then the picture is SUPPOSED to be offensive. It's touching upon how Bush and his followers' believe that he's chosen by God. If your're not offended by the picture then you're probably a RW Christian who believes in the divinity of Bush.

It seems to me that for all the gut reactions in this thread, and in another thread on this topic, that people are missing the point.

This picture is taking what so many RW Christians have said about Bush and showing you their thoughts personified in art.

No wonder you feel offended.

21. Right
But there are RW Catholics who have gushed over Bush being divinely chosen before.

Look at it this way...this is a picture from the mind's eye of a RW Christian "worshiper" of the Divine Bush.

It's supposed to be offensive, because the entire idea of a god-picked President-Priest IS offensive.

53. It is to me. (Your third sentence.)
I'm sickened and nauseated by it, every single day, because I am surrounded by fundies lusting after Armaggedon. I have not been exposed to this in a long time, and it is heart-breaking to me that people actually are so disconnected with this unbelievably beautiful planet that they want to destroy this miracle of the universe and all the infinite variety that it has created just so they can be right. I am struggling so hard with this right now, it maddens me to no end...I mean, how can people not see how unbelievably rare and special planet earth is? All I have to do is step outside and I feel instantly connected with whatever god there is, what god or goddess would create something so spectacular and then demand that humans destroy it to satisfy some end-game projection. We have at least a couple billion years more of good living on here if we don't screw it up with global warming, and then the earth will be toast, and all it's once in infinity uniqueness will probably never be duplicated again...

I am going off on a tangent there I guess, sorry, but I'm at a loss with this stuff.

I did laugh out loud at the picture. I'm only offended in that it is not serious enough, it lampoons him, and this is no joke.

24. Here's a thought experiment for you
Do you think that Rick Santorum would be offended or inspired by that picture?

If it the picture was with an article that praised Bush as being divinely inspired then it would be blasphemy, if it's with an article that is basically accusing the Religious Right and other Republicans of offering up a false deity, then it's satire.

Fine line I know, and one that not all Christians would agree with, that's for sure.

But I think I understand the artistic intent. It's supposed to be having this reaction on you. And it's not supposed to be a pleasant one.

That's why I think this might be one of the most powerful pieces of anti-Bush art ever created.

23. Blasphemous. But it reminds me of something funny.
Every year our church had a live Nativity scene for Christmas. The children and teenagers in the church stood in as the wise men, shepherds, etc. Our respective role was decided by the adults in the church. The year Iwas in it, they picked the school slut to be the Virgin Mary. All us kids had a nice chuckle over that one at the expense of our parents.

But damn, if there was such a person, Bush would be him. The beady little shark's eyes clash with my image of Jesus (if there were such a person) having soft, large, luminous eyes. I think the mouth is the worst, though. It's an arrogant, stingy mouth that utters blasphemies, not beatitudes.

I know it's satire, but I find it disturbing, too. They should've depicted him as liberals see him, in another picture, with the red suit, horns, a 666 on his forehead, and to top it off, a picture of an oil well-with-blood-spurting-out-of-it on his chest.

If they had done it with Jimmy Carter, it would have been fun. But a man with so much blood on his hands depicted as Jesus the Prince of Peace is so disgusting to me.

Incidentally, even though I don't believe Jesus was the son of God and that he was a mortal being like the rest of us, I do believe he was an extraordinary person in his own right, who never hurt anyone and loved everyone.

Carter wasn't an angel, but because most people think he was, any message would be completely lost.

It's *because* Bush is a bible-toting bomb thrower that a graphic like this is effective. He's been presenting himself as a man of Jay-zus for three years, this is the picture of himself he's been trying to present. Well here it is, outside of your imagination: how do you like it?

That said, that picture is disturbing to me, simply for the fact that it attempts to elevate such a bad joke of an unholy man (Bush) to a level worthy of reverence. As someone else here previously mentioned, the Right-wing Religious fundies truly are making a mockery of their own brand of Christianity with this nonsense.

Bush doesn't even know the first thing about being Christ-like.

...not to mention inaccurate, since Chimpy's face is superimposed over a bit of Roman Catholic imagery commonly referred to as "the Sacred Heart of Jesus." Since Dubya lacks a heart, sacred or otherwise, they should have chosen a different bit of religious art.

(On the other hand, it's worth noting that Republicans aren't the only ones to stoop to this. Back in 1976, some Carter supporters at the national convention were waving a sign showing Jimmy as Jesus, with the accompanying text, "J.C. for America!" :eyes: )

The illustration, like many in the media, is intended to spark discussion and debate, just as it did here. Does anyone actually think Jesus walked around with a burning heart on his t shirt?

If you're not often offended, you're not exposing yourself to enough challenging ideas.

And if you try to shut people up who offend you, you're a loser.
