I just realized something today as I looked at the calendar and saw the last days of August looking back at me. It's about to be fall. We're heading into the "ber" months. (Brrr!)
That means a lot of different things to us--back to school (and back to school sales), putting away your white shoes (if you follow those rules) and the autumn clothes and Halloween goods are already in the stores. It also means that Dubya is coming back from his month long vacation.
To do what? Among other things, count on him to cash in on the gut level reaction Americans will have to the second anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks. Showtime will be airing a movie about September 11 called "The Big Dance".
http://www.activeopposition.com/big-dance.htm"Written and produced by a White House insider with the close co-operation of Mr. Bush and his top officials, the movie The Big Dance represents an unusually close merger of Washington's ambitions with the Hollywood entertainment machinery.
A copy of the script obtained by The Globe and Mail reveals a prime-time drama starring a nearly infallible, heroic president with little or no dissension in his ranks and a penchant for delivering articulate, stirring, off-the-cuff addresses to colleagues."
When I first heard about this, I thought, there *has* to be something from the liberal/progressive side to counter this blatant propaganda--
---an independent film festival where talented amateurs produce their own versions of the story?
---some kind of coordinated effort by the political cartoonists?
---massive postering of counter-propaganda, such as is available at The Peace Pretzel (
http://protest.bmgbiz.net ) and many sites listed on our links page?
Anyway, as often happens, I got sidetracked and forgot about these grand ideas. Today, two things brought it back to my attention. The first is the calendar, as I mentioned above. The second is the amazing story of Sally Baron's obituary, and the effect it has had on the progressive community.
http://www.madison.com/captimes/news/stories/55234.php"Her family had come to the question of what might be a fitting tribute to her.
"My uncle asked if there was a cause," her youngest son, Pete Baron, said.
Almost in unison, what her children decided to include in the obituary was this: "Memorials in her honor can be made to any organization working for the removal of President Bush." "
I *like* this lady--"She thought he was a liar," Baron's daughter, Maureen Bettilyon, said. "I think his personality, just standing there with that smirk on his face, and acting like he's this holy Christian, that's what really got her."
Yep, that's what really gets me too!"She'd always watch CNN, C-SPAN, and you know, she'd just swear at the TV and say 'Oh, Bush, he's such a whistle ass!' She'd just get so mad," Bettilyon said."
There is also this op-ed from the Capital Times, if you'd like to read more:
http://www.madison.com/captimes/opinion/column/nichols/55218.phpI admire this woman and her family, and I love that the internet has allowed liberals everywhere to read and be touched by her story. We will not have her vote next November, but we can have her as our inspiration.
We only know about Sally because her family thought to put that line in her obituary. Who knows how many more hard-working Americans curse at their televisions every night, disgusted by Bush's smirk and his hypocrisy. For Sally, and for the many many other people who long to see old "whistle ass" voted out of office, let's put on our thinking caps and figure out what we can do to counter the Bush propaganda machine this September, and beyond.
