A York School graduate fascinated with military history and haiku poetry has been killed in action in Iraq.
Navy Lt. Kylan A. Jones-Huffman, 31, was shot to death Thursday by an unidentified gunman in Al Hillah, 45 miles south of Baghdad, while serving on temporary duty with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force, Department of Defense authorities reported Friday. A military spokesman in Baghdad told the Associated Press that Jones-Huffman was in a sport utility vehicle that had stalled in traffic when the gunman walked up and shot him before fleeing into a crowded market.
His death brings to 65 the number of U.S. soldiers killed since major combat was declared over on May 1. Jones-Huffman had left active duty in 2001 but was heavily involved in military affairs, teaching Greek and Nazi history at the U.S. Naval Academy and working with the Navy's investigative arm. It was unclear when he was called up to join the expeditionary force, which serves as the Marine command in Iraq.
Jones-Huffman was raised in Aptos but graduated in 1990 from York School, a prestigious private high school in Monterey. He graduated from the Naval Academy four years later before earning a master's degree from the University of Maryland.

I used to play against York when I was in high school around here. He was only five years younger than me.
He leaves behind his wife, who was his high school sweetheart, brothers and sisters, and, ironically and sadly, a father who survived a tour of duty in Vietnam.
What a sorry, sorry waste.
