Health Canada ROCKS
I just saw a news blurb that says that Health Canada is considering funding smoking rooms for crack addicts. They already provide safe houses for people to inject heroin in a monitored controlled atmosphere.

This gets these people off the streets, makes sure that they are in a safe environment where they cannot get hurt, and eliminates the criminal element completely!

I hope someday we can become this enlightened.

To Canada!

1. The time to end the US war on drugs is now
And if John Kerry doesn't do it when he takes office, I will be extremely disappointed, but probably not surprised.

2. It would be one of the first things on my list.
The war on drugs has been expensive, inefficient, and has never helped anyone.

Legalizing alcohol took the criminal element out of it completely! Imagine how much it would help the cities if we got rid of the criminal element!

And yes--some people would use--but it is much better for everyone if they do so in a controlled atmosphere--then no one gets hurt. They don't have to commit crime to support their habits--they don't die on the streets. And we would know who is using--and would be there to give them treatment if they so desired.

It is a win-win for everyone.

3. Johnson, the former governor of New Mexico, convinced me of this
He gave some powerful, impassioned speeches on this subject. I imagine he shocked some straight-laced New Mexicans. :)

4. Where do I sign up?
Just kidding. You are once again absolutely right on cateacher. Addiction is a disease the fact that in the United States we have criminalized that disease is in and of itself, nothing short of criminal.

6. Imagine a country that cares about the welfare of
it's citizens instead of raiding other very poor countries for what little wealth they have. I think Canada should invade us to save us.

14. That reminds me of Castro's official remarks on his visit for
the funeral of his old friend, Pierre Trudeau:

I have come from Cuba at this time of profound sadness for the Canadian people to pay my respects to the unforgettable memory of Pierre Trudeau, a world-class statesman for whom I had personal bonds of friendship born of feelings of sincere admiration.

I always considered him to be a serious political leader, with real concerns for the problems of the world and of the Third World, a rational politician who made a transcendent contribution to modern Canadian history, a righteous and courageous man who encouraged, in difficult circumstances, relations between his country and Cuba.

I had the privilege of having had with him long and numerous exchanges about ideas and points of view. Though we didn't always share the same point of view, our exchanges were, however, invariably respectful.

...

I wanted to come personally to show the respect, friendship and sympathy I feel for the people of Canada, which is one of the few developed countries in the Western world to not have practised colonial exploitation and with which we have shared years of fruitful economic and cultural exchanges.

9. Canada: "It's like America, but without the stupidity!"
In the words of Michael Moore in "Downsize This". It's pretty damned hard to disagree with him on this issue.

Hmmm, maybe I need to rewatch "Canadian Bacon" again...... :D
