16 days of August- 30 American active duty dead in Iraq

But you'd never know it listening to radio in Florida. During two days of no electrical power courtesy of hurricane charley, my sole connection to the outside world was am-fm radio. We have one of those wind up emergency radios. In two days of listening to radio all day long, I didn't hear one report of any American casualties in Iraq.

Brings to mind the Jon Stewart comment the other night, "War in Iraq? Is there a war in Iraq?"

We did hear all about Jeb Bush and George Bush however, over and over, ad nauseum.

1. A headline in the Pittsburgh paper this morning...
"Two from State killed in Iraq"- way down the e-page.

Very sad. Looks like 1000 killed well before election day.

This, AND a billion $ a week- about $ 4.00 a person.

2. Truth be told
We don't know how many are dead, seriously wounded, or even how much this is costing us. I believe we've passed 1000 long ago, and that we'll never know the true numbers.

5. the handover changed nothing
The casualty rate, as far as I can tell, hasn't changed
one bit.

This doesn't surprise me -- as one of the strongest pieces
of magical thinking in American political and business
culture is the idea that you can take an org chart, reshuffle
the lines the connecting the names or photos, and "change
will happen." People who sneer at voodoo or "animism" will
nonetheless nod sagely as these organizational talismans are
distributed far and wide.

Same players on the field: nothing's gonna change. Not
without a lot of work on the relationships between them,
at any rate.

J.
