1. Good for Ed!!!!
It's time for more public figures to pick up the populism mantle that the DLC has so ignominiously discarded on our behalf.

29. LOL** how do you know?
How do you know Dean is still in the organization?

Perhaps he has his reasons for remaining a member. Deans actions are what speak bombtrack. And his words are inspiring and bring hope to Americans.

All of us have joined things from time to time and then realized it was not for us. Im not trying to jump down your throat and I am not one of those who will blindly fight anyone critical of Dean, but I dont think that his DLC past association is too significant because of who he his and what he has done in creating highly successful petition drives on issues that other candidates in office have chosen not to confront as aggressively, Dean is creating a nationwide political grassroots movement that is unprecedented and has never been done, and basically this movement reveals to all Americans the true essence of possibility.

Dean saw something needed to be changed and he has sought to change it. His candidacy is the epitome of how actions, tenacity, and purpose can change the world.

He is a remarkable person and he is doing what essentially we all should be doing in one way or another: giving back to our country that has given us so much, and because of this incredible movement started by a governor from Vermont, this movement is breathing life back into America again.

35. Then why was he running as a centrist BEFORE the antiwar crowds
Edited on Mon Aug-25-03 07:23 PM by blm
grew?

Why was he changing his trade policy as late as January?

Why did he tell SC audiences in early 2002 that he had problems with the "liberal wing of my own party."

You think his switch was because of some noble anger towards the way of the centrists? If you are so certain this is true, can you pinpoint exactly what caused Dean to shift so drastically AGAINST the third way style governance that he employed for 11 years?

I think his rhetoric was just a way to get liberal antiwar $$$$ for a campaign that could never get them before. Ted Rall seemed to notice the same.

14. The DLC
is a group within the Democratic party that set about finding ways to win elections in the fear that we were losing to the repubs too often. Their chosen tactic has been to play to the center in the hopes of winning over the undecided voters and those put off by specific antics of the right.

Unfortunately what started off as trying to repackage liberal Dems as centerists has given rise to real centerists or even right wingers running on Dem finances and effectively silencing the left. The belief in the DLC has become the left leaning Dems have no where to turn to so they will have to play along with the DLC and hope they get some table scraps.

15. The effect of which has been...
to move the Democratic Party to the right, silencing voices on the left which is where "democracy" REALLY resides. All we are left with really, is one party rule - right-wing conservative ideology. And any movement towards "the center", away from the "right" is immediately a trigger point for "ultra-conservatives" to froth at the mouth and yell "socialist!!!"....be forewarned, these are the tactics of fascists.

24. The DLC is a Trojan Horse for neo-cons to infiltrate the Dem party
Any time you listen to a Democrat and think, damn, they sound just like a Republican, you'll most likely find them on the membership list of the New Democrats (what the DLC membership is called).

link: http://www.ndol.org/new_dem_dir_action.cfm?viewAll=1

Policy for the New Democrats and DLC is set by the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI). Will Marshall, the president and founder of PPI and former Policy Director for the DLC is a signer on the Project for the New American Century (PNAC)'s two statements on Iraq.

Tod Lindberg, published by The Blueprint (DLC magazine) also signed both PNAC Iraq statements, as did James Steinberg, Deputy National Security Advisor to President Clinton.

I also found claims that Gary Schmitt, president of PNAC and Ed Feulner of the Heritage Foundation helped fund the DLC in the beginning, but I have not found any real, verifiable proof of that.

Marshall Wittman, another Blueprint author, is a Senior Fellow at the Hudson Institute (Richard Perle, trustee) and former aid to Ralph Reed.

Blueprint articles include:

The Case Against Saddam, by Khidir Hamza 11/15/01

America s New Mission by Will Marshall 11/15/01

<snip>
In addition to quashing terror networks, the United States and its coalition partners must dramatically raise the costs to states that harbor terrorists or that routinely employ terror as an instrument of policy. It's no longer enough to put them on the State Department's blacklist, issue travel warnings, or impose halfhearted sanctions. In extreme cases, such as Afghanistan, we have no choice but to topple a regime that protects a "guest" who openly boasts of his intent to terrorize and kill Americans. Any other outcome would make a mockery of President Bush's solemn vow to wage war not only on terrorists but also on states that support them.

But it's also time to ratchet up the pressure on Syria, Iran, Sudan, and other regimes known to sanction terrorism. Options include withdrawal of aid and diplomatic recognition, economic embargoes, expulsion from the United Nations and other international bodies, political and military support for insurgents, and preemptive strikes to stop terrorism or weapons proliferation.

The United States should also orchestrate a more serious crackdown on rogue states that are hard to deter with conventional means. In Iraq, for example, a ruinous war, sanctions, and a decade of continuous enforcement of the "no-fly" zone have done little to alter Saddam Hussein's sociopathic behavior. Since there's every reason to believe that Iraq is continuing its quest for biological and nuclear weapons, it's time for sterner measures. The United States should step up aid to rebels fighting to create an independent Kurdistan in the north, and explore the possibility of a Shia state in the south as well. The idea of partition is anathema to diplomats who fear creating regional "power vacuums," but its risks must be weighed against the incalculable danger of allowing Saddam to concentrate on acquiring weapons of mass destruction.

Sorry, but that sounds like the same crap the Greens were saying about Al Gore in 2000. Remember? How the only difference between Gore and Bush was the speed at which their knees hit the ground when corporate lobbyists walked into the room? Anybody else remember this?

30. The question to me
Is how much of the Democrats base has been sucked into the right wing pit of hell by them already? What plan do the traditional Democrats have to deal with the DLC? And which way the DLC-heads would fall if the DLC was excommunicated.

that DLCers are the true Dems, the ones who would never stray from the party no matter who was nominated. I've never been sure, in that case, why we needed to change the direction of the entire party to make them happy, but I'm content to accept some of life's mysteries...

edited for grammar. :dunce:

on the audiobook of A Conversation With God.

That is, when God was a man. In alternate chapters, God was a woman, and then She was Ellen Burstyn.

Just thought I'd share a little Ed Asner trivia. :D
