In the poll by Gonzales Research and Marketing Strategies, 48 percent of voters questioned disapproved of the president's performance and 43 percent approved. In an April poll by the Annapolis-based company, 62 percent of voters liked what Bush was doing and only 31 percent disapproved.

When Democrats were asked to pick their favorites, Howard Dean with 25 percent and Joe Lieberman with 23 percent were far ahead of the rest of the seven candidates. John Kerry at 11 percent and Richard Gephardt at 10 percent were the only other candidates in double figures.

The poll showed that Bush would be in a tight race with both Dean and Lieberman if the general election were held today.

"The striking and important thing politically is to see the distinction between today and April, the last time we did it (a poll) Gonzales said. "He's got more voters in the state that disapprove of the job he's doing as president than approve. That's a bad position to be in," he said.

But the state is not like the Northeast. It is more closer to the south and thus it is a border state.

Ehrlich's (R) victory was due to the inepitutde of KKT, the Lieutenant Governor, coupled with the strong dislike key Democrats had toward her. For some reason many Democrats in the state hated her and openly supported Ehrlich.

Even as Ehrlich won the Governorship the Democrats held onto the Attorney General and Comptroller's office quite comfortably. Two Republican House seats shifted to the Democrats as he was winning the Governorship.

What makes MD Democrat is Baltimore City and the DC suburbs of PG and Montgomery County. The Baltimore suburbs can swing either way. Baltimore County elects Democrats to local offices predominantly, but it can vote Republican in statewide elections and in presidential races. Anne Arundel County votes Republican in most statewide and presidential races, but Democrats can win local offices there.

The rest of the state, which includes most of its landmass, is heavily Republican. The Western Panhandle votes Republican, as does the Eastern Shore. Southern Maryland, which also can elect Democrats to local office, supports mostly Republicans.

So, on the whole, MD is still a Democratic state, although most of the land is Republican. But unfortunately for Republicans dirt doesn't vote. People do.

i would say 90% of the jews in MD are Dems. MD is a GREAT state for the dems when it comes to presidential elections. You can put MD and all of its electoral votes (11?) on the dems side of the ledger!

Frankly, I'm a little disgusted by your suggestion that Lieberman's strong performance against Bush is because of the Jewish vote. I know that some of the more strident DU'ers have been trying to marginalize Lieberman's candidacy for months, but I expected better of you.

You are misreading what I said. You know that I have defended Lieberman and have stood up to him against some of the unfair attacks that he gets here daily.

I am from Montgomery County originally, and there is a very large Jewish population there. I am not saying that that is where he gets all of his support by far, but rather that is probably part of the reason MD is gonig well for him.

There's been some actual publicizing of dissent! The Democrats have a couple of candidates who are saying what many of us feel, that this Bush presidency is perhaps the worst thing to ever visit our great nation, and that in 2004 we need to change it.

People are getting an earful of just what's been going wrong for the last 2½ years, and that squishy-soft "support" for Bush has turned out to have all the depth of Saran wrap. Keep swinging away at this incompetent fool, and we have a chance to put this country back on track in 2004. Follow the "Republican Lite" line of certain other candidates, and spend November 2004 wondering why we got our butts kicked again.
