Mexico Challenges U.S. on Protection of UN Workers

http://reuters.com/newsArticle.jhtml?type=politicsNews&storyID=3334723

UNITED NATIONS (Reuters) - Challenging the United States, Mexico scheduled a Security Council vote for Tuesday on the protection of U.N. workers, opposed by Washington because of a reference to the International Criminal Court.

The Mexican draft, co-sponsored by France, Germany, Russia, Bulgaria and Syria, was first circulated in April and then revived last week after the disastrous bombing of U.N. headquarters in Baghdad on Aug. 19.

The action has put the United States in a difficult position. Vetoing or even abstaining on the resolution so soon after 23 people were killed in the bombing would be difficult to explain, diplomats said.

this has now passed - thank you Mexico for not bowing down to the bloody hands bushgang.

2. Mexico caved to US DEmand of no Int'l Crim Ct reference - so the
resolution says that harming UN workers is a crime under international law - but it no longer says what the country of citizenship for the dead UN worker can do about it.

They said that they did not want to embarrass the US into a veto, so they compromized.

The International Court will have to wait for a post Bush US Administration - we have Gitmo and don't need no UN International Law cover.

5. That is too bad, it should have stayed in there
"The Bush administration opposes the new court, set up to try perpetrators of the world's most heinous crimes, as an infringement of U.S. sovereignty and a potential venue for frivolous lawsuits against U.S. officials abroad."

FRIVOLOUS?????? No wonder they hate this court!!!! :grr:

6. There is an irony here...
say Bush, after he is turfed from the White House, is judged to be a war criminal by the ICC, he cannot go to any country that is a signatory to the ICC, mind you, he doesn't go anywhere anyway, but, still, he would be known as an at-large criminal and I would LOVE to see that happen!

(I know, I know, wishful thinking but it does give me pleasure at the thought! lol)
