CHARLESTON, W.Va., Aug. 27 — Jessica Lynch, the former prisoner of war who became a national hero when special forces rescued her from an Iraqi hospital, has been honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, her lawyer said Wednesday. “As of the now, she is not a member of the military anymore,” Stephen Goodwin of Charleston said.

1. A bit misleading

Lynch has been discharged, not because the Army is no longer using her for propoganda, or for anything she did wrong or right. She is being discharged because her injuries prevent her fuldilling her service requirements. This is not unusual at all.

This discharge also allows her to get paid for telling her story, something she couldn't do while a member of the military. If anything, it will help them in their efforts to propogandize.

maybe you know that from another source. I haven't followed this very closely, but I didn't know that statement had been made.

Seems to me she could get an "early out" if her recovery was expected to take her past her release date.

If she was injured too seriously to serve, it would seem that she would have some sort of compensation for the disability. I can't imagine her lawyer not knowing that. So, his comment seems curious if not telling. I knew a sergeant who had his leg and foot injured so seriously that he had to wear a boot with a metal brace similar to that of polio victims and he stayed in service. But maybe in today's Army that doesn't happen

She'd better not talk about what really happened to her. I'm sure that she has been instructed to do so.

*I have nothing against Jessica and I truly beleive her experience was truly traumatic. I just hate the way that she is being used by the Rovian propaganda machine.

A female private Lynch's age from Minnesota received serious schrapnel wounds in her face, requiring surgery on her pallet. Her hometown gave her a grand "support our troops" welcome, with the media in tow, flags everywhere, and the reporter said that the private said that she couldn't wait to get back w/her unit.

Mom would have gladly taken the honorable discharge, but perhaps this private wasn't glorified enough to be offered it? After all, we are short bodies.

Well, she still darned well BETTER GET SOME MEDALS out of her experience! :mad:

I say she's got a helluva lot more guts than Grumpy Rumsfeld will ever have in his arrogant old body. :grr:

You know, that movie about her might not end up being such a bad thing to watch, after all... :eyes:

is anyone going to do a REAL interview with her?
ask her how her captives treated her, why the misinformation of her injuries and all that?

but giving interviews is something she will now expect to be paid to do. And I doubt she is going to submit herself to a media grilling just to satisfy us.
