what is Dean's stance on FEDERAL gun control?
just watched a clip on hardball showing Joe Lieberman tuesday saying that Dean opposed the Brady Bill and other federal gun laws?

Yes, I know Dean supports smart state laws but does he oppose the "Brady Bill"?

1. Dean said he supports Brady/NICS and the federal AW ban
He's in favor of renewing the federal AW ban, but no additional federal gun controls.

2. No
Supports Brady, supports closing the gun-show loophole, supports renewing the assault-weapons ban.

3. Lieberman is FUCKING IDIOT!

Dean supports closing the "Gun Show Loophole" and renewing the assualt weapons ban. Dean has made this very clear.

He stated after that, that it should be up to states to determine their own gun laws. He feels that gun control in a rural area means something different than gun control in DC, therefore they should pass their own laws.

Lieberman is such a jackass, and is desperate. Good riddance to that loser...his campaign is almost dead.

4. This thread should give you all the information you're looking for
Gov. Howard Dean (D-VT) on gun regulation (states' rights, pro-gun)
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=431382

IMHO, he's trying to be as straightfoward as he can. He says he doesn't want to add any more federal laws (except the closing of the "gun show loophole"). And he doesn't want to remove any of the federal laws currently on the books (including the AWB). He says that is as far as he is willing to go (in both directions).

Let's keep and enforce the federal gun laws we have, close the gun show loophole using Insta-check, and then let the states decide for themselves what if any gun control laws they want.

5. As far as I understand
Edited on Wed Aug-27-03 06:49 PM by mkregel
He believes its up to the states and local communities to set their own laws.

That's fine by me - trust me you live in the boonies in Alaska, you NEED A GUN. BEARS ARE VICIOUS OUT THERE!

Likewise, the last thing you need is a concealed weapon in NYC.

9. "the last thing you need is a concealed weapon in NYC"
Tell that to a rape victim that could not overpower her knife wielding attacker.

Maybe you don't choose one but why should a law abiding citizen not be allowed to carry?

10. On that I would have to disagree.
Have you ever hear of Killeen Texas and Luby's cafeteria? Because of the Texas ban on concealed weapons. I knew the shooter. I wentt to school with his sister. The guy was a nutcase. If one patron...one person had been there with a concealed weapon they could have taken Richard out and My friends Kevin and Keith Might still have their Dad...my sister more than likely would still have her friend and Killeen High School would not have lost teachers. Richard had a "legal gun"...too bad a Luby's patron didn't have a gun to shoot Richard before 23 people died.

12. One did...
but she had left it in the car because it was illegal to carry concealed at the time. IIRC, she got elected to Congress afterwards....

6. What more gun control do we need?
Criminals don't obey laws the last time I checked. What more laws do legal gun owners need to keep them in line?

7. as per above
yes, Dean supports Brady Bill/AW ban, etc.

Lieberman is an idiot. He's grasping at straws. And his campaign is almost over.

What a joke he's ended up becoming.

8. Dean believes in sensible gun control laws
From the Dean website
http://www.deanforamerica.com/site/PageServer?pagename=policy_statement_civilrights_sensiblegunlaws

<snip>
I believe the federal gun laws we have—like the Brady Bill—are important, and I would veto any attempt to repeal or gut them. The Assault Weapons Ban expires next year, and it should be renewed. Although President Bush has claimed he supports renewing it, he is talking out both sides of his mouth; his staff has signaled that he doesn’t want or expect Congress to renew the ban, and that is wrong.

I don’t think we need a lot of new federal laws. But we do need to do a few things at the federal level, like requiring Insta-Check on all retail and gun show sales. We also must do a better job of enforcing the laws on the books. President Bush promised to be tough in enforcing gun laws, but his Administration has prosecuted only about 2% of all gun crimes and they are virtually ignoring 20 of the 22 major federal gun laws on the books. That is an abysmal record and as President, I’d make tough enforcement a reality, not just political rhetoric.
