Has anyone else found that the Smirk's smirk is even more annoying?
When Gov. Bush, a self described "media-creation", ran for president he was an arrogant, inexperienced, drug-using fratboy. Despite a BS from Yale and an MBA from Harvard, this man was probably the dumbest, least experienced, most unworthy man in history to run for president.

His platform was a two-pronged attack: Step one involved turning his failures (and there were many to choose from) into non-issues and even successes. Step two involved lying about his opposition.

He got the nickname "Smirk" because he sat around with that dumbass, self-satisfied grin on his face. During the debates he arrogantly blasted Clinton/Gore for their military efforts. This man, with little experience being sober, let alone in public office, had the audacity to attack Clinton's positions without offering his own solutions.

All he did was smirk and stumble through carefully rehearsed soundbytes. Occasionaly he would so horrificly butcher a sentence that it would somehow end up viewed as "homespun, down to earth, blah blah" when in reality it was just the inane drivel of a functionally illiterate moron trying desperately to give his speech in spite of his massive hangover.

Once he finished speaking, the applause would invariably come. And with the applause, the idiot son was visibly rejuvinated. The man would feed off of the applause as though he were some sort of vampire. Then, when his spirits were sufficiently lifted we would see the look of frustrated confusion become replaced with an arrogant, condecending smirk.

The only comfort I could take in this was the fact that I knew his smirk was empty. He would stand there grinning like an idiot, but no one would know why. Not even him. And so the nickname "Smirk" was given to him, for his preffered facial expression at the end of speeches. Of course, most people knew this was a meaningless facade. In fact, that was the most infuriating part.

Now, however, things have changed. In two and a half years Bush has trampled over Democracy to bully his way into the White House. He has named to his cabinent the most conservative, facist, hawkish, sadistic assholes since 1938 Germany. He has led an assault on American values and 98% of the country by his economic practices. He has passed tax cut after tax cut for the wealthy, and stands poised to completely rewrite tax laws. He has had his Pearl Harbor, and somehow managed to turn world sympathy into hatred. He has supported the horrificly Orwellian Patriot Act, which threatens our very civil liberties. And he has used Christianity as both a shield and as a sword with which he attacks "non-believers".

There was a time when people knew that Bush's smirk was one of arrognace, displayed by someone who didn't really understand what was going on.
But times have changed.

Bush now wears a new smirk. This time, it is one of triumph. Unquestioned power. He proudly displays his smirk, for it is one that seems to shout, "Hey, fuck you, America!" He now stands after speeches grinning like an idiot, as always. But his attitude has changed. You can see it in his eyes. The pure bliss and joy in his eyes and on his face does not come from the applause. It comes because he is getting away with everything, and is wondering what he can get away with next.

When reporters question him on issues such as lying about nuclear weapons, we see the new smirk. It is the smirk of a man who is doing whatever he wants and doesn't care if he gets caught.

We, as a nation, may have caught him with his hand in the cookie jar; yet still he smirks. Is this because he is too stupid to understand?
Not anymore.
He smirks because we don't know that he stole the family car, totalled it, and then spent the savings account at the track.

1. I've thought this lately too
Thanks for putting it into words. I too have thought that surely to God, with the economy still in the tank, American soldiers dying every day in Iraq, the whole world hating the U.S., etc., SmirkBoy would lose that ridiculous condescending half-grin of his. But nooooooooooo ... it's even worse than ever, and it seems to be saying, every time I see that bastard on the tube, "Hey, FUCK YOU, AMERICA! I got my tax cuts for my fat-cat pals, so SCREW YOU!"

How anybody with even half a brain can support this sorry excuse for a humanoid is totally beyond me.

2. the smirk is and always has been unsupportable
I can't watch the man, he's so self satisfied.

"Look mommy, I went poo poo in the potty! Aren't I a good boy!"

3. If the little turd actually has to campaign in front of real people...
...and even debate the Democratic nominee, maybe my overly trusting and gullible fellow citizens will began to see the smirk for what it really is. I can't understand why so many people are still fooled by Smirk and his band of con men and thieves. When the hell does the survival instinct kick in for most people?

Nice analysis of the Smirk, btw.

4. Thanks
But about what you said regaring debates:
There may be no debates. You know, with the war and all. Add to that his vacation and his 11 hours of sleep per day.

This idiot described himself last week as "a follower of American politics". To which Jon Stewart responded: "Oh, see, as PRESIDENT, I thought you would be a leader of American politics"

5. Bush on the job

The good thing about Bush's long and leisurely summer vacations is that next fall it will be impossible for him to claim that he doesn't have time for three or four debates. I just hope there will be a Dem candidate who can rip him to shreds.

18. the only problem is
Rove will never allow Bush to an unscripted debate. I would love to see a debate with Bush and whoever the democratic person is, in a ten question faceoff without knowing what the questions are. No way to pratice for them. Let the chips fall where they may. I think we will all see the real idiot we have leading our country.

7. Very thoughtful analysis, ComerPerro...
I too have trouble just looking at the guy now.

I think that his smirk is the expression of a guy who, having tested the waters, is now convinced that he can get away with any outrageous act, and still be supported and propped up by Rove and Co. (In fact, it is they who come up with all the outrageous stuff for him to do, since, with his utter lack of imagination and curiosity, he makes the perfect puppet.)

He knows that he can get away with murder. Literally.

8. Thanks
I was wondering why his mere presence just sickened me so much. I think I figured out and detailed why it is that we hate him so.

10. Always have disliked his body language
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 08:42 AM by jumptheshadow
In the debates and on the campaign trail he always seemed to oscillate between delusional and instability in his reactions and his body language. I'm not an expert but I've been concerned about it since Day One. A freeper relative agrees with me.

13. One of the reasons my brother started hating Bush
is how he always leans on the podium, seemingly for emphasis.

It pisses my brother off to no end.

12. Smirkboy has a head the size of Dallas and.................
who cares what we think! Not him! His condescending attitude is what really ticks me off. He is the one who hates Americans. He is an arrogant SOB and I hate him more than words can express. Is he too stupid to understand that we may have caught him with his hand in the cookie jar? He doesn't give a rat's ass about that, because he thinks he is above all and he has never in his whole pathetic life been held accountable for anything! We as a nation mean nothing to him. Remember, he wants to be a Dictator, it would be so much easier.

15. Sally Baron hated it when he smirked
Sally was the coiner of "whistle-ass" and her kids mentioned how she hated his smirk.

David Broder, however, pointed to his "self-confidence" as support for his Bush=FDR thesis.

I'm with Sally on this one.

19. Bush=FDR????
It's the policies and gains of FDR that this administration is trying to dismantle. Looks like another example of how they speak the opposite to reality.

As for smirks, Bush has a new expression that turns me off. He'll finish a sentence and press his lips together in impatience. Like he's admonishing an errant child. "I told you not to do that but you had to go and do it" sort of thing.

16. great observation ...
The smirk showing in his eyes at the most inappropriate moments, even when he manages to control his mouth.

A friend who was watching TV coverage of him at a memorial service commented that it looked like he was going to burst out laughing.

When I see him go up to the lectern, I always think he looks like he's mugged the real President and stolen his clothes. (Would explain why his suits still don't fit properly.)
