Help debunk the Bullshit
One of my bosses, a right wing nut, sent me this today. I am sure that this is not the first time for this.

Subject: In case you hadn't seen...

Subject: FW: ENRON'S BUDDY IN THE WHITE HOUSE

Some of this has been circulated before, but I donâ?Tt remember
all this in its entirety...and it likely will never appear in the
mainstream press.

Certainly there is a political dimension here:

a.. Enron's chairman did meet with the president and the vice

president in the Oval Office.

b.. Enron gave $420,000 to the president's party over three
years.

c.. It donated $100,000 to the president's inauguration
festivities.

d.. The Enron chairman stayed at the White House 11 times.

e.. The corporation had access to the administration at its
highest levels and even enlisted the Commerce and State
Departments to grease deals for it
f.. The taxpayer-supported Export-Import Bank subsidized
Enron for more than $600 million in just one transaction.

SCANDALOUS! .....

g.. BUT...the president under whom all this happened WASN'T
George W. Bush.

h.. SURPRISE ......... It was Bill Clinton!

Please pass this on so the whole Country will Know. The Media Won't tell it!

6. Are you going to offer a rebuttal?
Edited on Thu Aug-28-03 01:38 PM by FlashHarry
Or will that endanger your job? Personally, I'd copy the Snopes stuff and hit 'reply all.'

9. An e-mail like this deserves a response
He is more of a supervisor than a boss. He does not have the ability to hire or fire. Most of the stuff he sends is stupid but this one is easily proven bullshit

10. I still would not send a reply from your work account.
Instead, create a hotmail account that cannot be traced back to you and send a reply to everyone on the distribution list (including yourself or you will give yourself away.) Make sure you include his original message so that it is clear that you are responding to him.

4. Just like that darn liberal media
That won't report that Bush allowed Enron to monopolize the utilities in California, which caused the blackouts and massive debts that led to the recall mess.....

7. You might mention that the media won't report it
because it's utter horseshit. As others have mentioned, Snopes debunks this claim.

I love it when they do this. They make shit up and when the made up shit isn't reported in the media, they use it as evidence of media bias. You have to give them credit. They're good liars, and since there are so many stupid people . . .

8. Do three things
First, hit "Reply all" with the snopes link, and cut and paste the text into the email.

Second, tell the sender to either get his head out of his ass and stop believing every right wing lie he gets in an email or to never contact you with his far right shit again.

Third, include this link: http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/bushlay1.html

Oh, Bush and Lay were close. Check these out.

11. When will this crap stop?!
RW'ers have this amazing ability to think that passing on a lie is not the same as originating the lie. It's all the same thing.

Frank,
The media will not report it because it is bullshit. If it was true, FOX would be running it daily even though the story is over a year old. This is another internet hoax like the toothbrush up the ass one while the honeymoon couple was out of their hotel room. There are many public records to prove who slept in the Whitehouse. Ken Lay never spent the night in the Clinton administration but he did have a PJ party with Poppy Bush.

Here are a few things to review

http://www.thesmokinggun.com/archive/bushlay1.html

http://www.opensecrets.org/2000elect/contrib/P00003335.htm

And from http://www.snopes.com/inboxer/outrage/enron.htm

The debacle that is Enron will take years to unravel, and the end result will be that no one person or group or political party will be held to "blame" for the whole affair. Enron has been spreading around so much money and influence through its lobbying efforts for so many years -- among both Republicans and Democrats, in federal as well as in state governments -- that neither party can take the moral high ground here. As The San Francisco Chronicle reported:

Enron's tentacles ran so deep into Washington's political establishment that 71 sitting senators and nearly half of the current House of Representatives received Enron money during the last decade, including some who are now investigating the company's bankruptcy.
And The Hartford Courant noted:

The company also was generous with state and local candidates from both major political parties. Its tentacles were wrapped around high-profile figures in several administrations.
The attempt made in the piece of netlore quoted above to deflect blame from the current administration and dump it onto the Clinton White House is nothing short of silly. To wit:

The Enron chairman stayed at the White House 11 times.
As Brendan Nyhan revealed in an article at Salon.com, Enron CEO Kenneth Lay was never an overnight visitor at the White House during the Clinton adminstration. But, according to Nyhan, "Lay did, however, stay at the White House when George H.W. Bush was president."

16. Debunked over a year ago at snopes
Isn't it amazing that these Clinton horror stories just go on and on and on?

I have had right-wing nutcase acquaintances of mine send me the same shit stories TWICE, but a year apart. I write back saying "I already debunked this for you a year ago" and give them a hyperlink to snopes to prove the point.

When one right-leaning mother of 4 sent me the "Hillary wouldn't meet with the old ladies group" story AGAIN TWO WEEKS AGO(@#$%^!), I cut N pasted the entire snopes article for her...AGAIN. Her response - "well, I would imagine that snopes is a leftwing organization. How can I believe this is true?" Pathetic, ain't it?
