Hey,
It only gets more intense over time, this cognitive dissonance about whether or not I can believe in America any more. Everything I see in my friends, my family, my community, is hopeful. We're liberal, we are honorable, we care about the truth, we have made immense progress in the last century. (Even here in the benighted, hopeless, disgusting South.) But most of what I've seen at the macrocosmic level leads to despair. We're selfish, myopic, totally devoid of compassion for others, care nothing about the truth, and are eager to reverse all the progress we've made in the last century.
Feels like a roller coaster ride of love/hate feelings for my country ever since the evil SCOTUS decision. Can anyone offer some clues to reconciling hope and despair in light of all the mixed evidence we're seeing? America is simultaneously the greatest threat to the world, and still the greatest source of hope.
