Flags lowered longer for Reagan than victims of 9/11

On September 12, 2001, Bush ordered flags be flown at half-staff for 4 days,

I hereby order, by the authority vested in me as President of the United States of America by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, that the flag of the United States shall be flown at half-staff at the White House and upon all public buildings and grounds, at all military posts and naval stations, and on all naval vessels of the Federal Government in the District of Columbia and throughout the United States and its Territories and possessions until sunset, Sunday, September 16, 2001.

On September 14, he extended the period to September 22.

To honor the death of Ronald Reagan, Bush immediately ordered flags lowered for a period of 30 days,

NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE W. BUSH, President of the United States of America, by the authority vested in me by the Constitution and laws of the United States, in honor and tribute to the memory of Ronald Reagan, and as an expression of public sorrow, do hereby direct that the flag of the United States be displayed at half-staff at the White House and on all buildings, grounds, and Naval vessels of the United States for a period of 30 days from the day of his death.

7. I agree, I was living in NY then.........

But we had the missing person flyers around for months, funerals and memorial services for months as well, and we would walk by Fire Houses that were knee deep in flowers and pictures and gifts sent from around the world - so flags at half staff would have been nice, but not as noticed in NYC. I couldn't walk by a Fire House without getting emotional for a long time.......

ON EDIT - And what REALLY pisses me off is that this fuckhead Bush pissed all over New Yorkers and pissed all over the gifts from the entire planet when he killed all that goodwill and invaded Iraq because of some Oedipal problem........

Tradition is 30 days on the death of a president. If Ford, Carter, Bush 1 or Clinton died tomorrow, we'd get flags at half staff for 30 days as well.

That said, the 9/11 victims should have gotten much longer.

The tradition is to fly the flag at half staff for 30 days upon the death of a former president. Lowering the flag for civilian deaths is relatively rare and there is no guideline for the length of time it should fly at half staff...regardless of the tragedy.

Upon the death of the governor of a state, territory or possession, the flag shall be flown at half-staff on all federal facilities in that governor's state, territory or possession from the day of death until interment.

The president may order the flag to be flown at half-staff to mark the death of other officials, former officials, or foreign dignitaries. In addition to these occasions, the president may order half-staff display of the flag after other tragic events.

The flag should be briskly run up to the top of the staff before being lowered slowly to the half-staff position.
