DU, GD, IMHO is out of control.
Posts that should get attention, get none. Posts deserving of no attention get it all. I'm getting discouraged with DU and GD. Is there anyone else feeling the same?

3. Lots Of Talking At, Not Talking To Going On Here
Credit our recent successes here and the way the campaign is turning. The adreneline in this place is squirting.

I'm as frustrated as you but nothing we can do. I just ignore the 50th thread on a planted mike or LIHOP...there's still a ton of great posts and ideas happening here, yours included.

12. "DU this Poll" and "Visit this Website!" at the top of the forums
Some of this may be alleviated by locking at the top of page two of the following collections:

"DU this Poll" - You can enter a request to DU a poll and folks can review those when they come into the forum

"Checkout this website" - Again, a post always at the top for posting the sites that you would like others to see

So often these types of posts get the responce "Done" or "That's another one!"

This would work well for both GD and GD-Campaign 2004

Also...is there a way to vote for a thread and imply its importance?

17. Good idea for the "check out this website" posts
Would be a collective "Recommended websites" page where people are able to vote +1 or -1 on each site which would contribute to an overall rating for a site. The sites with the higher ratings would float to the top of the page. Sites could be further categorized according to content. This would take additional programming to the DCForum code though.

posts go off into archives before people who would be interested get a chance to read. See if that helps?

13. True, and we should alert on those to get them moved to the Lounge.

Newer posters often post in the wrong forum, older ones do to some extent, too. Probably the most common "wrong forum" is GD for things that should go in the Lounge, plus GD threads that should be in GD2004. That makes for a lot of wrong threads in GD!

As KoKo says, KICK the good threads.

10. Yes, it's discouraging. DU has so many people posting now that

it's difficult to keep up, but some good threads have always been overlooked while posters pile on lesser threads. I don't know if there's an answer for that.

24. if it makes you feel any better ...
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 02:24 PM by welshTerrier2
i saw the link for Krugman's column and read it today ... it was great ...

DU is no different than any other media ... people like the "hot" stuff and the catchy headlines ...

instead of grabbing some news article that proves bush and hitler are the same person (you'd get tons of replies), i often take an hour or more to compose my very best thoughts on a given topic ... when i finally submit my post, sometimes there's discussion and sometimes not ...

i guess some of it comes down to why you are posting in the first place ... sometimes, it's as simple as wanting to consolidate my thoughts on an issue and improving my writing ... ultimately, my goal is to either educate others or have them educate me on the topic i've selected ... it is certainly frustrating, though, when the Enquirer threads (like bush linked to devil worshipping cult) get more replies (by far) than an intelligent discussion of the impact of globalization on American workers ...

frankly, i think the problem, at least to some extent, is that there's so much anti-bush focus and focus on the "horserace", that issues and analysis take a back seat to those threads that help DU'ers keep score in the big November race ... it's too bad that we can't also be thinking longterm about developing a consensus on the issues ... without a supporting platform as a foundation, November is a sprint, albeit an important one ... but sprinters tire quickly ... we need a few more distance runners around here ...

43. it's cool...
i didn't realize she was getting so much air-time. I saw it on CNN's site and thought I would 'freak out about it' as someone so kindly put it ... This is the first I have heard of it in months...and it makes me sick to the point that I wanted to rant and get others' opinions on the matter.

It does matter to me though...it is a telling sign of what is important and what is not...here and elsewhere...that people give this a pass...

thanks, and I didn't take it TOO personally! :-)

LOVE THE TOONS!

16. a lot of liberal, thoughtful, and thought provoking posters...
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 12:37 PM by mike_c
...have left DU or visit much less frequently than they did a couple of years ago. There seems to be a greater proportion of reactionary "moderates" who prefer "winning" at any cost, who champion fascist views (see http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=104x2480203 if you think that statement too extreme), and who substitute passion (and loudness) for thinking and discussion.

I recognize that this is an elitist view, and I'm sorry, but the quality of DU discussion DOES seem to have declined, especially since the Democratic primaries.

Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 12:43 PM by vetwife
I think part of the problem is that reality is getting very very real and the very thought of Bush and Co. going in should be energizing us to write thought provoking material to keep people pushing the BFEE envelope until we get victory but some had rather talk about love affairs forbidden. I agree with Nostamj.
