Edited on Fri Aug-29-03 05:28 PM by karlschneider
I mean, say the entire Cabinet showed up at your front door (this is obviously a rather bizarre thought experiment, I realize) and said,
"We will exercise the 25th Amendment and appoint you President, effective immediately", what would you say?

I pose the question because I honestly can't say how I would respond.
:eyes:

Edit: OOPS, SORRY, thought I was in GD. Mods please delete or move,
thanks.

2. Not yes but HELL YES.
There is just simply NO WAY that I could ever screw up as badly as *. Plus I'd just nominate Al Gore as my vice president and just do everything he said.

4. If it was his cabinet, no.
If Congress showed up and said they were shelving Bush, Cheney and the Cabinet, meaning I could appoint by own, then yes. I would be very scared though. We only know the surface damage he's done.

8. If the entire cabinet showed up at my front door
the rickety porch in front of my trailer would surely collapse. I'd take the job because anyone in DU would make a better president than bushit. I'd take the job because I'd know that it had to be the direst of dire emergencies to bring those people to my trailer in Texas and I can't turn my back on my country in an emergency because I'm an American and a Democrat. As soon as I accepted the keys to the White House I'd fire every one of those ass-kissin', influence-buyin', Constitution-thwartin' bastards tangled in the wreckage of my porch.

38. Hallo to you, and thanks for the welcome!
I wouldn't really want to be president...right now "The Informed Electorate" desperately needs the bodies, and I'm to the rank-and-file born.:-)
I do want to thank you folks and Will Pitt at Truthout for teaching me that "informed" is best when accompanied by "noisy". I'll never be quietly rank-and-file again!

16. Yes! Opportunities for a leader w/sense haven't been greater since Hoover.
It really doesn't take much vision to solve the major problems we face right now. If it weren't for their ideological blindnesses, the right wing would do it. Their blind, dogmatic certainty is their biggest attraction to the weak minded, and their biggest weakness when they get in power.

Essentially, there are two major problems Bush can't solve: the Iraq and the economy.

The Iraq solution is simple. To the nations we insulted, you acknowledge that our pre-war intelligence was weak, just as they thought it was, and that we probably erred in not allowing inspections to continue. You agree to share the booty (e.g. control of oil fields and reconstruction contracts) with them to the extent they participate in rebuilding as well as restoring and maintaining order over the many years needed to incubate a democracy.

The economy is even simpler. The tax cuts at the high end must be suspended. The monies saved thereby must be redirected to the states and municipalities, to retraining programs, to employer job hiring credits, to tax credits for the middle class and/or to a temporary reduction in social security contribution levels at the very bottom end of the earnings scale. If these steps were taken, the economy would rebound in no time flat. But they violate the anti-government, anti-tax ideology of the right and are beyond their capacity to implement.

21. Absolutely!
What I would do:

1) Unseal all the records about Cheney, there's got to be enough in there to cost him his job. (along with unsealing a lot of other things as well, let the sunlight in!)

2) Appoint Al Gore the new V.P.

3) Resign

23. I would take the job...
And what I would do before Congress impeaches me for being effective:
1. I would do is run to the U.N. and yell "HELP!"
2. Fire everyone except Powell (because he CAN be effective if you let him and the rest of the world does not hate him totally yet) and ask Clinton who would do best where else.
3. Cancel every contract with Bush's buddies.
4. Start competitive bidding for rebuildment of Iraq while also sending as many shipments of supplies and support network people (military personal) as I can.
5. Start a new program called Iraqicorps based on the Peace Corps, only have retired people going over to Iraq and the people who lost thier jobs because of Bush.
6. Get Congress to authorize full aid to RAWA and other related organizations for Afganistan while lowering aid to the warlord types.
7. Get Congress to repeal ALL tax cuts.
8. Appoint Clinton as moderator for the Israeli/Palestinian talks with full US backing.
I can think of more...

24. As soon as I'm sworn in, I'd:
(1) Ask for the Resignations of all the Cabinet members.

(2) I'd appoint:
George Mitchell - Sec. of State
Al Gore - VP and COO
Robert Reich - Sec. of Labor
Wesley Clark - Sec. of Def.
Bill Clinton - UN Ambassador

(3) I'd convene a National Commission of honest bi-partisan, objective people to investigate:
9/11
US Foreign Policy 1980-2004

(4) I'd Task Force a bi-partisan commission to develop legislation to address a massive restructuring of our energy policy with the intent of:
* Reducing our oil energy consumption by 70% by 2010
* Making decentralization of energy and jobs the primary outcome of the restructuring.

(5) Create a taskforce to resrrcuture healthcare delivery in the US

(6) Then I'd retire...

I have absolutely no doubt in my ability to do a better job than Whistleass. If I was overwhelmed by diplomatic issues, which is likely as I am tactless, then I could appoint Bill Clinton to some such position as Secretary of State, assuming he would accept. Indeed, there are many good advisors around -- no reason to put up with the current crop of lame-Os.

It would be very important to get the criminals out of the offices and into the jails and to get some very aggressive prosecutors on the job of preventing the flight of Halliburton, Enron, war criminals, etc. A quick amnesty for pot offenders should empty enough jails to accommodate the corporate thieves....

Hmmm. They'd probably have another rifle in Hinckley's hands before I could turn around, ya think? Guess they let him out just in time...

42. not a chance
It is a seductive offer, but upon reflection I say no way.

- I have two teenagers, and if their dad gets assassinated, that would screw them up needlessly. My wife would be heartbroken. I have no illusions but that my days would be numbered in that position.

- There must be a million other US-born citizens over 35 who share my ideals and who would want the job more.

I guess I'd say, "thank you very much, but if you've come to my door, then you have passed over too many others with more relevant experience and interest."

First - I'd fire every damn one of them.

Then, I'd appoint Democrats in their places.

Then, I'd undo all of Bush's executive orders.

Then, I'd have Bush arrested by my new AG.

Then, I'd resign and let my VP take over.

Then, I'd have a beer and celebrate.
