Anyone else here very upset re no news on CARE director Hassan?
This is just another very distressing development with the Iraq situation, and I'm wondering what Blair and co. are doing about it. Just read on ABC website that the wonderful new Allawi-"led" Iraqi gov't declares they will "not give in to {kidnappers'} demands."

quote:
"We hope she will be released, we are doing our best, we are praying for her and we are definitely doing our best to release her," Mr Allawi told the US cable broadcaster.
:unquote

I wonder what "doing our best" means exactly. Has it come to the point where beheadings will no longer shock us? Thanks so much, Mssrs Bush and Blair.

2. There's really nothing we can do
We can hope that calmer heads will prevail and that Ms. Hassan will be let go. The two Italian aid workers were released. Many others have been

Still, for us, it's all wait and see.

5. True, we can only wring our hands with helplessness...
...but I certainly hope she is freed soon. The Italian government had to have had given SOMETHING in exchange for the release of the two Italian women--kidnappers don't just let their hostages loose for nothing. I suspect large sums of money changed hands there.

I guess I'm just venting my own frustration here. It angers me that none of these things would necessarily happen, if Bush and Blair especially did not wage this cruel, unnecessary and nonsensical war! I just hope the nightmare of the last 4 years will begin to end after the election, although post-election chaos is a really strong possibility.

7. Yes, but the Italians evidentally don't have the stiff
upper lip and heartlessness of the British government who "don't negotiate with terrorists". It would be nice if the Italians would negotiate but how can they if she is not one of their nationals?

11. I was suggesting that the British would follow Italy's lead in this.

Who else does one negotiate with but with the enemy, no? If the worst comes to Ms Hassan, it may just spark an outrage among many people (well, in me, for one). Then again, the British govt seems to have taken the horrible fate of Bigley with such equanimity, so I'm not exactly optimistic about this.

6. It's the weekend. There is no news on the weekend.
Even when it happens, you will hear about it later when everyone has gone back to work. I think she's in very dire straits if still alive. I had a tactless post of mine removed recently about this, so I am hesitant to say anything lest I offend the squemish, but I think we are going to hear something later and after the fact.

9. Oh, dear Gawd, I just hope it isn't what we all fear and dread!
Why take her, of all people? The absurd irony of it all just disturbs me no end.
I guess we can only wait and hope for a good outcome for Ms Hassan in the meantime.

10. The Iraqi boy who wants to swap places with Hassan
The Sunday Times - Britain

October 24, 2004

“I would crawl on my knees for her all over Iraq if that would bring her back,” he said. “I plead with the kidnappers to let her go, take care of her and help her so she can continue the good work she is doing in Iraq. She may be British by name but this woman is more Iraqi than many of the Iraqis here. Take me instead.” - Mohammad Hamdan, 18

12. What a painfully heart-wrenching story. Thank you much for the link.
This is what makes Ms Hassan's kidnapping all the more deplorable, confusing and distressing!

14. I sincerely hope you're right. Why the kidnappers chose Hassan
especially as their victim makes no sense at all. True, many Iraqis themselves can't be glad about this.

My prayers, for whatever they're worth, are with her. Thank you for the comforting note.

17. I expect them to behead her
Remember "terrorism is war by the poor, and war is terrorism by the
rich". By that standard, hundreds of civilians are being killed by
american and british military actions.

It seems that "we" only "get it" when we see one of our own killed
in front of us. They haven't the means to kill 10's and 100's like
we do with bombs and big guns, so in return, they kill 1's and 2's
on camera with knives to send the message home.

All the deaths are deplorable, and that "we" trivialize the hundreds
is what is really sick about the whole thing. Clearly this lady
has had a saintly life, and will die the death of a great warrior,
hopefully inspiring us all to stop with the mass murder.

Like stalin said:
"One death is a tragedy, a million deaths is statistics."

If the media could put every american murder on television, we'd be
so sickned of this war, the troops would be out of there. The
mass media have failed democracy in so many ways these past years,
that i see them as the core enemy of democracy.
