I met Dennis Kucinich again tonight for the third time…
This was THE most amazing night of my life!
So I came down to Iowa on Saturday ahead of the ‘rest of the MN campaign and its
“Courage America Convoy” to spend some time with my Grand Parents (very active DFLers). Most of this summer, whenever I’ve been sitting around with nothing to do, I’ve felt it is time wasted I could be working to get Dennis elected! As soon as I arrived in Des Moines I contacted the Iowa HQ and told them I was down here early and wanted to help. I’ve had the privilege of meeting John Fredrich before at a strategy meeting he had with our MN campaign, and he was responsible to getting Dennis up in Minnesota, so I was very excited to get working for him. They told me they would be doing some canvassing around 2:00 P.M. on Sunday, I said I’d be there!
I arrived at the Iowa HQ the next day and went to work. There were several staffers there and the volunteers were gearing up to go out into the drizzle door-knocking. I teamed up with a man and we went from door to door of registered Democrats in a targeted precinct. While most people were not home, one family was particularly receptive. They invited us in and asked us question after question about Dennis. Every member of the family, including the 3 teenagers, had at least one question. They came away very impressed and kept insisting we have something to eat or drink. Amazing experience! We headed back to HQ tired but inspired.
I had seen on Dennis’s schedule that there was a house party at the house party that night at John Tapscott’s. When I mentioned the name to my parents and Grand Parents they said, “HEY we know John!”. They called John and told him we’d be there.
Now I’ve gotten the chance to meet, talk to, and shake Dennis’s hand about 3 times. The first two were at public events, tonight’s, the third, was a much more intimate encounter. Dennis spoke for about 45 minutes and then got around to chatting with people. A women from the Iowa campaign worked me threw the crowd to talk to Dennis (I’m pretty shy sometimes). I had brought with me 2 copies of the article about me from the
SW Journal, one was a photocopy I intended to give to him to read and the other was an original for him to sign.
When I got up to Dennis I was soooo nervous my legs were trembling. I can’t even explain to you why I was so nervous this time, but every time I see him speak I am blown away. I tried to tell him something along the lines of “I’ve met you three times now and each time you inspire me more and more...” I ended up skipping words and making very little sense to myself (although I was told later I sounded just fine). He really looks at you and listens no matter how much you may be babbling! : ) I then showed him the article and asked him if he could sign it. He was so impressed with the article that he plopped right down there in a chair and started reading it. As he read he signed it “To Alex- I am very moved by your support. Best wishes for a bright future. Your Friend, Dennis Kucinich.” All this in the middle of a room packed with people dieing to talk to him. Eventually his staff hurried him along. He said he was very impressed and he made sure to personally take down my contact information on the back of the photocopied article. He also wanted to be sure the article ended up on the national site.
He made sure to thank my mom and my dad and even congratulated my sister on being MY sister! My dad said “We want our son back he has to start school soon!”. Dennis laughing responded to me “Let me tell you, when I was a junior in HS I thought I knew everything and wanted to drop out…. Don’t do it!”.
My Grandpa who is a Kerry fan said he might be converting, and my dad a skeptic, is beginning to give in.
If every man women and child in America could meet Dennis he’d win the election in a heartbeat!
I’m FREAKING out!
Hope everyone enjoys this!!!
GOOOO DENNNNISSSS
