1. Then the unions will be transformed.

They will go underground. Arrests. Trials will result.

Take it from and old drunk: America is behaving like an alcoholic. We just have yet to face that transformative crisis that forces us to change. 911 was just, in truth, the punch in the nose that made us belligerent.

It is gonna have to get a lot worse before it gets better. Such thin solice.

2. Or, it could mean a revival of the labor movement!

You should know, as a union member, that your brothers and sisters faced much harsher opposition 100 years ago when the labor movement was really coming into its own.

As much as I hate to say it, perhaps some tough times is what the labor movement needs in order to re-commit itself to the neverending fight for workers' rights. Perhaps an all-out assault on worker rights by the Bush Administration could help to get people in different trades to band together in solidarity once again, rather than just using their union as a vehicle for better wages and benefits for themselves only.

Sure, times are going to be tough -- but that doesn't mean that all is lost. Sometimes a brighter tomorrow is borne out of the worst adversity.

3. I'm with you, brother...

Labor is going to face some tough times. The one thing we need to start doing is STOP asking for permission and START standing up and FIGHTING. Our leadership has been so afraid of hurting feelings and stepping on toes we've forgotten what it is to fight.

We hold the power. We can't be afraid to use it.
