I compromised myself today with my students...
We have been following the election, of course. When Kerry conceded today, I informed my fifth grade class about it and told them that George Bush had won. Half the kids applauded. Some booed. Man, it took all I had at the moment to be professional. Don't get me wrong...these are great kids. But they have heard that Kerry is a baby-killer and that if he was elected we would get attacked by terrorists. No wonder some were happy!

I almost always am straight with my kids. During drug abuse education and even sex education. But I lied to them today. I told them for the first time who I was for in this election, but that no matter who won, we show respect for the president who is doing his or best for our nation. I lied. I really feel bad that I couldn't have been truthful, but I thought that doing so wouldn't have been professional.

1. That's one of the resons I no longer teach. You have to lie regularly.
Lying confuses me, and that makes it hard to function.

5. I think you were truthful. We show "respect" for the president,
that is, we don't threaten his life or otherwise break moral and legal laws guiding decent people.

Doesn't mean that you won't be doing your best to get him impeached, right? Right!

You didn't lie. You told them the truth, and you gave them an important life lesson. Don't give in to baser instincts in a time of defeat. Face defeat with grace, remain standing, and then get back to fighting like hell.

It's been a struggle, but I've been working on doing that all day today.

6. I don't agree. I believe it is respect for the 'Office of the Pres'
That is the way the pols insult the 'person of the pRes'

That is how they fight with words.

It would be an interesting topic for the students.
