What if Canada merged with the USA? The electoral map would look
something like this:

Assigning electoral votes by population, Canada as a whole would get about the same as California, or 55 electoral votes, and the overall final tally would tilt quite differently than it did last night.

I'm just trying to think outside the box here, and see if there might be some longer term silver lining to the cloud that is getting so many of us down today.

Your thoughts on this? Could this idea fly? Would enough Canadians go for it? Would enough Americans? What would it take procedurally to bring this scenario about?

14. Love the Map!!!
I have a couple of cousins that live in Windsor, across the river from Detroit, and at the family reunions they tend to regard us all as slightly whacko. Course that could be just the family thing... What annoys my cousins most is that the U.S. tends to ignore Canada 90% of the time. They've told me that they have this rowdy neighbor to the south that sometimes they just wish would sit down and be quiet. Doesn't bode well for us joining them or them joining us. Of course that's just a couple of cousins ideas, not a sampling of Canadians in general.

2. As a Minnesotan I can tell you that Canada would never
join the US. They hate the idea. Anyway Canada would be divided up among it's provinces into new states, and each would have different numbers of EVs. Some of the provinces along the border are very, very conservative bible-thumpers.

31. I seem to recall hearing that Alberta as a whole backed Gore and Kerry
It's only the area right along the border that's skewed towards Bush (cattle farmers who think he'll let their beef into the US if they kiss up). There are a couple of large cities in Alberta which are more liberal.

Alberta is Canada's most conservative province, but a poll showed that even there, a substantial majority would have voted for Kerry.

but the the border just looks so much nicer when they're blue too, and there are still a few votes left to count anyway, even if Kerry conceded already.

and Quebec does its own thing...we could create a whole bunch of new countries...

Imagine British Columbia from Canada to San Diego. The Confederate States a crescent from the NW territories to Florida and Virginia, Laurentia (Minnesota, Ontario, Wisconsin Illinois and Michigan), New France (Quebec) and New England (Pennsylvania through the Canadian maritimes)....

The equivalent of the break-up of the Soviet Empire. But the skunkweed in the pipe dream is Canadians would not want any of that.

I can tell you that there just is no way in hell that Canada is going to join the US. Now that the chimp has stolen another election, our battle is going to heat up here to keep out of the fool's stupid moranic missile defense shield and other deep integration that is being proposed.

YOur map is pretty funny though, a much needed laugh on this sad day.

40. not a chance, I'm afraid

Funny stuff, but you may as well abandon the idea that Canada would merge with ANY PART of the US. We have been fighting for over 200 years to resist union with the USA. Canada is still the ONLY nation that the US tried to invade and was completely unsuccessful.

Hell, the only reason our country is united (barely) is our opposition to the US.

44. That's a different proposition
It's a whimsical idea, but I think (as a Canadian) that Canada annexing part of the US, or merging with it, would be quite a different proposition than the US taking over Canada, which has always been a fear in Canada.

Maybe we could think of the blue states as one big refugee claimant. Since taking in refugees in need is one of our Canadian values, it wouldn't be out of character for us to do this.

Or maybe we could start small, and bring in New England first, just to see how we all get along. (One of the benefits would that the Red Sox -- and the World Series trophy -- would be ours!)

On a less whimsical note, the reality is that the political divide in the US is chillingly geographical. I believe it was a truly great American President who said that "a house divided, cannot stand."

48. On first glance the invitation to take in the blue states seems
inviting, but think about it fellow Canadians: we have built our empire on heavy sweater mills (compare: US on Heavy Metal music), we like ski-doos ...they'll want sea-doos. Our entire humour (with a "U", yes) industry is based on "makin' fun of the amerikins" ... . AGAIN THINK ABOUT IT ... If we take in the blue states we would have to start makin' fun of ourselves again ... that's regressive!!!

Y'all can come for a visit, then make up yer mind.

Should we start some sort of adoption program/foster home program for the bluekidz, in the meantime?
