Pathetic: 67% of Dems cannot name a Dem candidate
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 12:03 PM by HFishbine
"From what you have heard or read, can you name any of the candidates running for the 2004 Democratic nomination for president?"

No, can't name a candidate:
ALL: 65%
Republicans: 61%
Democrats: 67%
Independents: 66%

http://www.pollingreport.com/wh04dem.htm

More republicans can name a democratic candidate than dems can.

It's no wonder that a majority of democrats think Bush will be reelected. We have a lot of work to do folks. No matter who your favorite candidate is, we've got to get out from behind our computers, stop talking in echo chambers and reach out:

1) Write a letter to the editor
2) Go down to the local board of elections, get some free voter registration forms, and canvass your block with information about your candidate.
3) Proudly display your candidate's name. (Bumper sitckers, t-shirts, anything.)

1. I don't know about the majority thinking Bush will be reelected
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 12:16 PM by alcuno
There is apparently a new CBS poll that says that 38% of Americans think they will probably vote for Bush and 50% say they will probably vote for a Democrat. I'll look for a link.

And think. If it's this bad for Bush WITH NO OPPOSITION, how bad will it be when people are more informed.

Here's the poll. The new numbers are not yet posted.

Alcuno,

I think the numbers you are referring to are "deserves reelection" or "would you like to see Bush reelected?" When asked if "it’s time for someone new in the White House" for example, 48% say yes, while 45% say the president deserves to be reelected. (http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=728)

That's a far different question from "do you think Bush will be reelected." On that question, the outlook is still quite dim. 65% of South Carolina democrats, for example, say that regardless of who they intend to vote, they think Bush is likely to be elected. (http://www.zogby.com/news/ReadNews.dbm?ID=726)

So, I think my point still stands, that we must take action to move public opinion, and we would do ourselves a workd of good if we took our efforts beyond cyberspace.

5. I sourced the poll.
MSNBC just reported the numbers but pollingreport.com does not have them up. Take a look at the question.

8. Exactly
The poll you cite asks, "do you think you will probably vote for George W. Bush or probably vote for the Democratic candidate?"

Bush 33%
Dem 27%

But that's different than asking who you think will win. When Dems think Bush is likely to be reelected, no matter who they vote for, we have a problem.

10. Look again. Those are old numbers.
Something is wrong at pollingreport.com. This poll was just released and yet they don't have the most recent results. I just saw the numbers on MSNBC. 38% Bush - 50% Democrat. Craig somebody was talking about the new numbers.

12. Clarification
Edited on Mon Sep-01-03 12:36 PM by HFishbine
CBS is reporting: "When all voters were asked whether President Bush will definitely be re-elected, 38 percent said yes, but 50 percent said they think a Democrat can win."

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/08/31/politics/main570951.shtml

That's far different than saying that 50% of voters intend to vote democratic. What it does show is that 50% of dems nationwide don't think a dem can win.

My point still stands, although apparently is getting overlooked: we have to take some personal action to reach beoynd the wired world if we are going to make a difference.

14. You are absolutely right and I don't mean to change the subject
We'll have to see if pollingreport.com fixes what they have up now. Often reports are different from the actual question that people were asked.

3. I don't!
They've got to know SOMEONE.

Considering the majority of the people in the US are either couch potatoes and watch TV to excess or are online they have to know SOMEONE.

6. Although I wish most Americans cared as much about politics as I do...
...I can't imagine this number is much different this year than compared to previous presidential election years.

9. If true its mind-blowing
First, if the love for * :puke: is as great as we would be led to believe, then all the supporters would kow the competition and would be conspiring along with Rush and Hannity to figure out how to mortally wound the comers. Next, there is also a strong anti-* feeling being evidenced in masses and I gotta believe folks are checking out the alternatives.

13. Funny, but sad
more Republicans can name a Democratic candidate than Democrats.

I also heard on tv, and I think it's probably from this same poll, that the number one candidate name answered was Al Gore.

15. Hey, please remember....
The DU is made up of a tiny gruop of politico news junkies (such as myself). Sure we wish more people shared our passion, but it's EARLY in the campaign season. I prefer to think that, down the road, we can say "told you so". Hang in there, fight the good fight & truth will prevail!

That's my point exactly! But we will not get to "I told you so" without fighting the good fight. THAT is what we must do now.
