why are men more pro-choice than women?

most polls I've seen that while almost equal overall usually show a marginal lead by men being more pro-choice, but when you add in the degree of that position, men have a very large lead on taking the more pro-choice stances, from some I saw more than 20% of men said the D&E procedure should always be available compared to less than 10% of women. Why is that?

I think men feel powerless (in more ways than one) after the fifteen minutes in which they are needed for procreation end. They feel their only say over the rest of the child bearing process is political. Therefore, they develop extreme and activistist stances.

well, speaking personally i believe that most men are pro choice because it is the women's decision, not ours. i feel that i have no room to say wether a woman can or cannot have an abortion, because i will never be in the same circumstance.

I mistrust all polls these days - they tell us Bush is still popular!

The antichoice movement leaders are men. The religious right leaders are all men.

We tend to lump things more readily into right and wrong. Most of the women I know are more adept at looking at the grey scale of issues. So I think overall, most men are either really pro-choice or really anti-choice, but you'll have more women straddling the fence.

At least being gay, I don't have to worry about getting a woman pregnant and then wanting an easy way out. :)

It's easier for a man to tell a woman to get an abortion--and cheaper for him to pay for one--than it is for the woman to bring the kid to term and for him to pay child support for 18 years. The man doesn't feel the effects of an abortion.

I just went over to www.thearda.com and checked for some statistics. There is a 1996 Kohut study of the general population that, for example, comes up with the following statistics:

Abortion should be generally available to those who want it; Abortion should be available but under stricter limits than it is now; Abortion should be against the law except in cases of rape, incest, and to save the woman's life; Abortion should not be permitted at all.

1) Generally available (Male 33.8%, Female (33.2%)
2) Available, but under stricter limits (M 25.4%, F 23.0%)
3) Against law except rape/incest/save life (M 31%, F 32.6%
4) Abortion should not be permitted at all (M 8.1%, F 9.5%)
5) Don't know/Refused (M 1.7%, F 1.7%)

overall, marginally more men are, .6% more said generally available, and 1.4% more women said not permitted at all. But when you also consider the degree of that on things like parental notification laws and the D&E ban, then men have a clear lead.

I still don't buy it. The strongest voices for parental notification laws have been male.

Republican men run my state. They passed a parental notification bill, and it was signed into law by our anti-choice male governor. Republicans are very interested in legislating women's choices - as we all know. I don't see them as a minority.

it's entirely possible for the most anti-choice people to be male but still more men overall to be pro-choice. this is comparing apples to oranges.
